Is it not tribalism, now rebranded as 'patriotism', for which soldiers are
sent to war. However, at the individual level of motivation I believe young
men join the army etc., mostly out of a sense of adventure than any other
motive, as upon joining they don't even know who the enemy will be, let
alone care.
