According to the guy I talked to at D*, it's not them they would apply
the MV, but rather HBO, or whatever premium station. He didn't really
know for sure whether they do this, but said he did read something
about it. I guess I'm just going to have to hook up my new DVD
recorder and see what happens. I do a lot of time shift recording on
my vcr and just was hoping to be able to do that with the DVD recorder

Maybe this is a recent change. I have recorded several HBO movies during
"free preview" weekends on my HDVR2 and burnt them to DVDs using my
Lite-On DVD recorder, but it has been probably a year since the last time
I did this.

Maybe it depends on one's particular equipment? With my antique Sony
SAT-B2 DTV receiver and early Sony GX7 DVD recorder, I've never had
any problem recording HBO/Starz/Sundance/IFC movies. (Never tried PPV,
they have an amazing sense of what I would not want to watch...) If
new receivers and recorders apply new restrictions, there's another
reason not to "upgrade".

Or are the people having DRM issues trying to record via an HDMI
interface instead of using S-Video (the best connection available to
me)?

Or could it be that only a few big-studio hit movies get restrictions,
and the indie stuff I tend to like is left unprotected?

I bought a Samsung R135 DVD recorder from Circuit City, and though I
haven't recorded any PPV's, it does record everything from HBO and
Starz that I've tried.

I purchased it based on this review

That's a good sign, I think, because your recorder seems to be one of
the newer ones. I am hooking up my LG tomorrow and I'll report back
whether or not it lets me record from HBO and Showtime.

I recorded The Sopranos on my DISH DVR & when I tried to transfer it to a
DVD to take to a friends house, it said that it was copyrighted and could
not be copied. HBO is the one who prevents this from happening.

Use a dvd recorder to record dvds??? What are you, some kind of nut?

I know, crazy aren't I?

It's
sad how dvd recorders are so crippled with anti-piracy that you can do just
about anything with them EXCEPT record DVDs with them. I use mine as a DVR
for time-shifting. Otherwise, I wouldn't own it. -Dave

Time shifting is what I do too including for shows on HBO or Showtime.
I guess they're so afraid we might record the Sopranos and go sell
copies on the street corner. Argh!

Pretty much all new DVD recorders see the flag and won't let you
record PPV's or movie channels like STARZ, HBO, etc.

It's an anti-piracy measure that severely impacts the consumer.

That's an understatement. It's like selling a coffee maker that doesn't
make coffee. Or another word might be "fraud", I think. -Dave

Havent tried recording directly to the dvd yet but I have had no
problems taking stuff from the dtv dvr using "save to vcr". Just hit
record on dvd r instead of vcr. Got many movies from starz and hbo plus
just got Munich off ppv the other day.

Please post when you do try recording from dvd. I'm very curious to
know if it works, and which recorder you have. Thanks.

Recording from a commercial dvd has not worked so far but I think my
granddaughter recorded a movie direct to dvd from starz the other day
wit no problem..the dvd recorder is a magnavox...the one Sams Club has
for 98 bucks.

Thanks, Bill. I bought an LG recorder and within about the first 20
seconds or so of recording off HBO, I got a message saying it was
copyright protected, and the recording stopped. I tried both movies
and HBO shows, and the same thing. I ended up returning the LG
recorder and got a LiteOn instead, and it records HBO just fine So
it seems a lot depends on the brand of recorder as to whether or not
they have the copyright protection built in it.

Just for completeness, what receiver or decoder box were you recording
from, and what signal path (analog composite "RCA", S-Video, HDMI)
were you using? I suspect sufficiently primitive receivers might not
provide the signal your LG responded to...
