Hi,
I've got a Sky Plus PVR 3 box. I'm thinking about getting a Dolby surround sound system / amp thing. Looking at the back of the box, and the instructions, I can only see a digital optical output on the back of the box ... and two basic left and right phono sockets. Is this right? Now, I thought that if I wanted Dolby Pro Logic 5.1 sound out of my 6 speakers, I'd need many more than just two analogue outputs. So does that mean I'd have to buy a home cinema system that can receive digital input in order to get Dolbly? Or, as the person on the Sky helpline just told me: "No, just plug the two phono leads into the amp you get and it'll digitally convert it into Dolby"??? Just looking around on the web I've not yet found a digital amp and I'm already looking at the over 300 quid level. Are digital input home cinema amps very very expensive still? Any thoughts on this, which home cinema amp/system I should get to complement my sky box, etc ... much appreciated. ....Damon |

Me again.
Actually that was a very lengthy message. The question I really want answering is: Q: Will I get Dolby 5.1 surround sound using the two phono outputs on the back of the Sky Box which I would then connect to a Dolby 5.1 amp ... or will I absolutely need to get an amp that takes a digital input? |

You will get Dolby Digital (5.1) from the optical out of the Dodgybox. You will get Dolby Surround (Pro-Logic) from the left/right phonos. Dolby Digital 5.1 = Front Left, Front Right, Rear Left, Rear Right, Centre and Sub, using discrete audio. Dolby Surround (Pro-logic) = Front Left, Front Right, Centre and Mono Rear, using matrixed sound (The centre and rear channel data is mixed within the stereo track). -- DVD rental: www.southeastbirmingham.co.uk/dvd Use 07962461234 referral +£5: www.southeastbirmingham.co.uk/payg Caller Display Units for sale: www.dodgy-dealer.co.uk |

No. They are very cheap. I bought one of the very first DD 5.1 amplifiers form Kenwood & it cost me over 800 pounds. You can now buy a very nice amplifier now that will do DD & DTS for under 100 pounds & is probably better than my old Kenwood e.g. http://www.richersounds.co.uk/showpr...pid=JVC-RX5062 -- Nigel Barker Live from the sunny Cote d'Azur |

As mentioned, you just need a digital amp with an optical input. These are numerous and cheap. Forget about ProLogic and the analogue connections. -- Digibox problem? : A reboot solves 90% of these. I was looking for something to replace my bulky speakers with for my games consoles. The speakers that are built in, are they sufficient for someone that wants surround sound but does not require it too loud? |
