Default Tivo 2 Tivo transfer speed?

Bill,

I'll find out in a few days. But, if they don't, I can put them to use
in a different application. I have a Gigabit switch, a Gigabit NAS and
only one PC with a Gigabit adapter, so the $9.99 USB adapters from Fry's
will not go unused.

supported wired adapters, and it may need to be hacked to get the drivers to
work.
For all I know the adapter will work just fine.
When I looked before, I did not see any gigabit support.

They are not going to work 'out of the box'. You'll have to
hack your tivo and add the USB Gigabit drivers. The
http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/
has links to the updated ( hacked ) tivo S2 usb network
drivers. They have been re-compiled to make them faster
and to add more device support. If you need someone to
hold your hand when your using your tivo... these are not
for you. If you are comfortable with removing your case,
voiding your warenty and pulling your dirve, you'll do
fine with these mods. I've got 5 hacked tivos and none
of them have ever broke.

Default Tivo 2 Tivo transfer speed?

Thanks, Jack.

I don't think "comfortable" properly describes me when I hit the return
key to enter a unix command line, but given a tested command line, I
have no reservation about updating the drive.

I successfully upgraded both Tivo units with 160G drives, but I would
not have attempted it without being able to copy a successful command
line from someone else. Can I assume I'll also find easy to follow
commands at dealdatabase.com/forum/ ?

I can get the drives into a PC (the Tivo drive will be the only drive)
and I have the Weakness Tivo V2 CD to boot from. Past that, I'll need
help.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Now you have me interested in looking into gigabit again. My newest PC has
gigabit, and would like to use the potential it offers.

You'll need a gigE-compatible (four-pair crossed) crossover cable.
The regular crossover cables used in 10/100 mbps networks cross over
only two pairs, leaving the other two straight.

Or use a 5-port gigE switch if you have any other devices in
your home that can run at 1000 mbps.

Joe,

Thanks for the help. The cables from both Tivo units are currently
plugged into an 8-port 1000 mbps switch. I've ordered Airlink Gigabit
adapters from Fry, but I understand I'll have to patch/upgrade/hack the
USB drivers before the Airlink adapters will work in my Tivo units.
I've just started looking for the drivers and script to do the upgrade.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This should get you started on the USB Drivers....

http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=44114

They are called 'backport' drivers because they took
fixes / existing / later code that had improvements
and they ported it backwards to the version of Linux
that the tivo runs.

Just a note for all you would-be-hackers... get your
serial port terminal connection set up when you are doing
your testing. You can get ALOT of info when the tivo
boots to figure out what you might have done wrong.

Hi Peter,

It's Series 2 in my case.

I'm starting to get a bit concerned about the effort. I've seen, in the
threads I've read, no constant solution to speeding up throughput by
"updating" USB drivers. I was expecting to do a straight forward mod
without worrying if it would be successful, or even if the machine would
boot.

Maybe there's is such a solution, but I'm still searching.

Peter,

Thanks for the info.

Is there a hack available that would speed up the USB port on a Series 2
Tivo?

Please let me know if you find one. The first question to address when
it comes to ANY discussion of tivo hacking is "Series 1, DirecTivo, or
Series 2?" Generally, the answer for Series 2 is "No."

Common mis-conception with gigE.

You do not need a crossover at all.

All you need a a regular straight-through Cat5e or higher
(cat 5 will likely NOT work reliably, i.e. lots o' errors, even though
you may have a link!)

The spec for gige takes care of auto-midX stuff. Just make sure all 4
pairs are hooked correctly.
1/2 3/6 4/5 7/8

Make sure each pair above is a pair
(GrW/Gr OW/O BlW/Bl BrW/Br)

That's it. I have been hooking "crossover gig" for years with
straight-wired ethernet cables.

A failure to keep the wires in a pair together (as above) can
completely block data transfer, even though the connection LEDs will
light. I found that out when I first set up a high speed connection
(that miswired cable worked fine for a 10mbps connection).

That's it. I have been hooking "crossover gig" for years with
straight-wired ethernet cables.
