David When Insight came to hook up my HD DVR I asked the guy if he had any HDMI cables. He said sure, they're $11. I hadn't even looked anywhere local yet. (I'm a newbie to HD) I was in Best buy the next weekend and saw some there the same length for $99. YIKES! alien |

Why do Component Video Cables and HDMI Cables cost so much? Is it the "speaker wire" crap all over again? Are there "budget" Component and HDMI cables? TIA, Dan I recently purchased a Gefen 3-port HDMI switch. Included in switch equipment bundle are 3 6-ft. HDMI cables they sell standalone for USD$40.00 each. They are excellent cables. I can't discern a PQ difference between them and an AR HDMI cable I purchased at BB last year for USD$85.00. -- Rob £¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤øø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤øø¤º°`° º¤¤º°`°º¤£ |

"speaker wire" crap all over again? Are there "budget" Component and HDMI cables? For component cables you can use ordinary inexpensive composite cables. Just make sure to get the same color to color connections on each end. You can also make them out of small coax by installing an RCA connector on each end. As others have already said you can find good quality HDMI cables on-line far, far cheaper than you'll find at the TV stores. Of course you can also find them at ridiculous prices that may run up to $150 Roger Halstead (K8RI & ARRL life member) (N833R, S# CD-2 Worlds oldest Debonair) www.rogerhalstead.com TIA, Dan Roger Halstead (K8RI & ARRL life member) (N833R, S# CD-2 Worlds oldest Debonair) www.rogerhalstead.com |

Under certain circumstances, cable quality may be relevant for analog signals. That's because an analog signal degrades gradually. The nice thing about digital signals is they either work or they don't; nothing in the middle. So if your cable is cheap but it works, that's as good as it gets. The component video cables (with the RCA jacks) carry analog signals; the HDMI cables are a digital signal. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) But I've also used cheap component video cables and haven't observed a problem. My conclusion: Go cheap. |

I just used small coax with RCA connectors and they worked fine as did using the composit plus audio cheap 6' cables which is what I'm using now.
