I'm looking into getting component video cables and was trying to figure
out the Monster cable line in order of quality. I know it goes from MonsterVideo 3 (best) to MonsterVideo 1 (worst), but where do the THX Standard and Ultra THX cables fit in? If MSRP correlates to quality, the Ultra THX is the best and the standard THX is the most basic. Is that accurate in terms of actual quality? (I know Monster is overpriced and its mostly hype - I'm just trying to figure out the internal comparisons of their products) MSRPs (component video cables) Standard THX (4 feet) - 29.95 MV1 (2 meter) - 39.95 MV2 (2 meter) - 69.95 MV3 (2 meter) - 89.95 Ultra THX (4 feet) - 99.95 Thanks in advance! |

Hmmm.... $100 for four feet of Ultra THX cable. Doesn't that tell you something about Monster Cable? Here's what it should tell you - Monster Cable is a scheme to rip off people of means who want the best but don't know enough technology to know how to prioritize their expenditures so that they get the overall best system with the money they have. In other words, they put $100 into four feet of cable when that $100 could be much better applied elsewhere in the system, and they do it because of some clever marketing hype which implies that they can improve their system by buying hugely expensive cables. Think about this: There are specification committees manned (and womanned) by engineers from industry who want a product category to excell in consumer's hands so that consumers will want to buy more of that product category. Do you think that they would design and designate equipment which would depend on $100 cables to bring out its superior features and qualities? Get serious, man! Monster Cable should be an embarrasssment to you. All it shows your friends is that you don't know beans about technology and the very equipment which you spent so much money to obtain. *TimDaniels* |

(I know Monster is overpriced and its mostly hype - I'm just trying to figure out the internal comparisons of their products) Part of sales hype is to obfuscate the genuine quality differences in a manufacturer's various lines. Many manufacturers have just ONE quality level with various colors which correspond to various prices, so they get you at whichever price level you feel you're at. The best thing to do is to go by the specs of the manufacturers of the equipment being connected by those cables. They want their equipment to work right, so they're not about to steer you wrong. *TimDaniels* |

I am just trying to figure out the hierarchy of their product lines compared to each other, not whether or not they're worth it. |

Just go to Home Depot and get 10 gauge wire (and that is over-engineered) because normal speaker wire (what they give you with the speakers in the store) is 24 gauge. I'm guessing they call it "cable" because it sounds better than "wire." And I am a retired programs manager for network programs, Rockwell, and we got many millions to wire many things, and we never used Monster Cable. On the other hand, the founder of the company was snowed in in Placerville, CA, and taken in, and showed his appreciation by giving his hosts several reels of Monster Cable. The guy still does not know what he is going to do with them. |

I agree that Monster cables are way overpriced, but I doubt the OP will be satisfied using 10 gauge wire for his component video connection. |

I feel your pain - you ask a simple question, and a dozen people give advice but don't answer the question. I think you'll continue to have the same problem regarding Monster Cable because the people who would know the real value of Monster Cable's various construction details wouldn't give Monster Cable any serious thought. I believe even the Monster Cable designers are not engineers but rather marketing types who design concepts, not solutions to connectivity problems. And as just concepts, the various levels of hierarchy of Monster Cable's product lines are accurately gauged by their prices. The more you pay per foot of cable, the more concept you get. *TimDaniels* |
