Default HDTV Calibration

Does any software exist that can be used to calibrate a high definition
picture? Is there a special/hidden channel broadcast by the cable/satellite
companies that a technician could use to calibrate an HDTV and/or receiver?

I use PAL version of "Digital Video Essentials" because of PAL's higher
resolution and wider colour gamut as compared to NTSC. PAL more closely
match HDTV standard than do NTSC. PAL DVE may be obtained at:
http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/231982

.....or at Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.fr or Amazon.de; whichever you prefer.

In addition to that you will need a multiregion DVD player with HDMI port
such as the excellent and inexpensive Philips DVP-5960. It do PAL nicely
on North American HDTV and simple region hack for it are available at
videohelp.com.

Default HDTV Calibration

I have a copy of Video Essentials that's marked 1997 on the printing.
Will that be adequate for a new HDTV set? I thought there's a
'Digital Video Essentials' later version, but would that be necessary.

Right now I don't have any stereo equip to hook up to it so I'm only
worried about TV calibration.

1997 "Video Essentials" are old version. "Digital Video Essentials" are
new version and were released in 2004.

Two versions of DVE are available. One for NTSC and one for PAL; both are
from same 1080p master, however.

But if I have an old 1997 version, what would I lose out on by staying
with that instead of buying the later version? (NTSC for me).
