Default Is televison dead?

Just got a new computer monitor with 1280X1024 resolution, well thats good
enough
for HDTV isn't it?
I can watch TV on it via a Freeview dongle, and record it too, so why should
I fork
out for a HDTV (and recorder etc....) when my PC can do all that stuff?

Seems like I would be better off investing in a big computer monitor and
having the flexibility
a PC offers.
Buying a 'dumb' TV, 'unupgradeable', TV seems a bad move, a PC and monitor
is so
much more flexible.

I mean I got a big 19" (4:5) monitor for £169

I could but a similar (analogue) TV for £249
http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/455_310158.html

But what am I getting for the extra £80 other than zero upgrdeability?

Only 1280x720, not 1920x1080.

Does your thinhamy do HDTV then. What brand its it. Does it go up to
1920x1080 ?

Yes but I don't think it will work with Skys copy protection ****.

How many dead pixels on it for £169 ?

Half of that is VAT. No VAT on computer monitors.

Anyone know where I can get a cheep 42 inch 1080x1920 monitor from ?
Preferably with a maximum refresh rate of 85 Hz or better.

Far from being dead it looks like Television has taken over the computer.

So long as you like letter boxes as it isn't a widescreen monitor. I
wouldn't buy a non WS monitor if I was going to watch TV on it.

If you are happy with that, go for it.

My 32" LCD will act as a PC monitor, Analogue TV, Digital TV and HDTV.
No lack of flexibility that I can see.

There is VAT and import duty, just no extra import duty.

You would be surprised.
I bought three £99 17" monitors recently and they had no dead pixels and
work fine.

You forget Agememnon's supernatural visual and aural acuity. It's a bit like
The Sixth Sense - only in his case, he sees dead pixels.

For you, yes maybe so. But you unfortunately have no idea how little 'Joe
Public' knows generally about computers. TV sets will never die until
everyone is computer savvy. That will never happen. If you tried replacing
everyones TV with a computer, you would find that most wouldn't even know
how to start the software needed to watch a programme.

A standalone TV set will never die (in one form or another), but for people
like yourself who are comfortable using a computer, you have a more flexible
system. It is only flexible however if you know how to use it. Without
that knowledge its a piece of useless junk.

I, like yourself use the PC as a regular TV, video recorder, video editor
etc....
