Default Now this is weird...

Last night I set my Panasonic DVD recorder (DMR-ES10) to record 'The Fly' on
Five (via the AV2 input from my Sky box). It recorded ok, but the title
menu shows the programme name as 'Film: The Fly', which considering I never
entered a programme name when setting the timer, is quite freaky! How did it
know what I was recording? The recorder doesn't have it's own EPG, and I've
never seen programme names appear before unless I enter them myself.

Answers on a postcard....

On my DMR-30 I've noticed when recording programmes from Five it pulls
the programme name up.

Same here on a DMR-EH50, only on five not any other channel.

Very strange, would be nice if other channels did it as well! Anyone got any
idea how it actually works?

Five seem to be transmitting the programme name label within Packet 8/30 of the
teletext stream (that's 'analogue' old style teletext) on their analogue and
D-Sat transmissions.

See

http://www.mrgsystems.co.uk/info/8.htm

There's no reason why the other channels don't do the same, but they are very
anti-teletext, instead seeing the future as all that cumbersome MHEG junk. (See
Red Dot thread)

Ah thanks, it makes sense now! Apart from the fact I set the start time two
minutes early, techinically the recording should have shown the name of the
previous programme!

Perhaps the recorder is smart enough to assign the name received for the
majority of the recording period...

Yes, if it's like my Sony DTT DVR, it doesn't grab the programme name until
about five mins into the recording.
