At the moment the following Dutch and Flemish TV channels (with a lot of
programmes in english) are FTA on Astra 1
Normally these should be encrypted by provider 'Canal Digitaal
Satelliet'...

Some of these channels are supposed to be Free to Air (or cable) anyway,
Nederland 1,2,3 and TMF for example. I hope at least these ones stay free. I
will certainly be watching TMF on Astra if it stays free. TMF Holland is
better than any of our music channels (except for the Dutch Rap), and
definitely better than the UK version which is a disgrace to the name TMF.
I'm dreading the day they put IP filtering and DRM on the web video stream
(like they have with another co-owned Dutch music channel, "The Box"),
because I watch it all the time. I will definitely miss the girl presenters
Renate and Miljuschka, and the music from Ilse de Lang, Rooom, Elize and
Anouk.

I wonder if they're trying out FTA satellite in preparation for analogue
switch off? The Dutch are doing a rash and premature analogue switch off for
terrestrial in the autumn, which will change the status of their DTT
transmissions, which are currently all scrambled. They will have to make
most of their DTT Free to Air when they switch off analogue, so I wonder if
they might also be having to do the same on satellite (like our Freesat
concept)?

Otherwise there might be some people in a remote corner of Holland somewhere
who will have lost their TV signal due to analogue switch off, but are out
of range of DTT and need to rely on satellite, but would have to start
paying Canal Digitaal just to watch Nederland 1. Could this explain why they
are experimenting with switching off the scrambling of the Dutch channels on
Astra 19 East?

P.S. If anyone from Bussum happens to be reading this, how about a web
videostroom for TMF Party, TMF Pure and TMF NL?

Only Nederland 1, 2 and 3 are FTA analogue terrestial. Nederland 2 is also FTA
on DVB-T. But only the west of the Netherlands (Holland) have DVB-T coverage
yet.

I hope at least these ones stay free. I

No there's a technical fault with some Canal Digital subscriber cards /
decoders, so they went temporarely FTA just to be sure those subscribers can
still watch dutch tv.

No, they probably won't, unfortunately. DVB-T will allmost for sure be
encrypted, not FTA! Therefore the Netherlands will probably be the first country
in the world where PUBLIC tv won't be FTA in any way...
But this decision is somewhat unclear now the government has collapsed... Let's
hope they get sensible and keep public tv FTA, even on DVB-T!

No. Because of copyright and commercial reasons, the main dutch channels will
not go premanent FTA on satellite in the near future i'm afraid.

Nederland 1, 2 and 3 (the public tv channels) are 'FTV' on satellite, one can
watch them without paying montly subscription fee. But one still needs to buy an
expensive smartcard (registered to an adress in The Netherlands) and an
expensive decoder or cam...

No, in short: The channels mentioned are temporarely FTA due to some technical
problems at Canal Digitaal. So enjoy it as long as it lasts...
