Default How Does Plasma Hold Up?

I'm looking to buy a 42" plasma (probably Phillips or Visio). I've been
scanning the posts in here, and I've seen some mention of burn-in and
quality loss after a few years.
My TV goes on when I wake up at 5:00AM, and is usually on pretty much
the whole day, until about midnight. Will this be a problem for a plasma TV?
Should I consider just sticking with a CRT?
TIA.

Notwithstanding what others may say, just go into any brick & mortar
consumer electronics store and they can show you at least one LCD falt panel
with noticeable pixel failure and a plasma with burn-in shadows.

Why not a Rear Projection? No burn-in.

Hmmm. My 3 year old, rear projection 1080i has significant burn in from a
cable news sation logo in the lower left hand corner.

Phillips on many of their marketed plasma sets use Samsung display sections,
have you considered the Samsung or LG sets?

Rear projection covers at least 4 different technologies, depending on how
you count "different." Of those only CRT sets use phosphors that age
differentially. LCD based sets do burn panels sometimes, but it has little
or nothing to do with station logos. Discussing RPTV without specifying the
technology used in the set is quite pointless, as is assuming that even
products within a technology class will be identical in all characteritics.

Actually, the LG and Zenith products look pretty good these days for the
$$$. Likely to get better support than with many other brands. Certainly
worth a look.

Are you faniliar with the technologies?

Would you expect burn-in on Sony XBR! sets that use LCOS technology?

LCOS does not burn in.

Take a look at this comparison chart. Pretty good summary. Look under
"Aging" category.

I would not expect the SXRD or LCOS devices to burn, but they do use a three
chip system and the filters are likely subject to the same degradation that
we see in the LCD sets and, since the light engines are not repairable at
the parts level, I would expect to see similar numbers of failures that
require light engine replacement as on the LCD projection products. It
won't make much difference whether you have a burned polarizer or a burned
LCOS device if you can't do anything but replace the light engine.
