how to create HD video file?

Hi all,

I created a time-lapse movie, which is in AVI format
because I used VirtualDubMod to create it, which incidentally
has barely compressed it at all.

Presently I want to convert to a 'standard' HD format, so that
I can give it to people and say, look, this is an HD video.

Can anyone tell me what the standard format(s) is/are
and what free tools are available to convert to those?

1080/60i is probably the most common HDTV broadcast format used,
followed by 720/60P. If this is for digital projection, which is
progressive-scan, you may want to create a version like 24P/1080 (if 24
fps is the correct speed to view the material.)

I used the full processing compressor.

I just tried it again with a time-lapse movie.

Images: 11 megs
Full processing results in 71 meg file
Normal recompression results in 71 meg file

Does VirtualDubMod allow Xvid compression?

Yeah, from the tool bar, select VIDEO, then COMPRESSION. All the av
codecs on your system will show up. Select the one you want. Pick
XVID9down on the bottom of the list). Click CONFIGURE to set it up.
Also, select VIDEO, FILTERS. A "FILTERS" window opens, click on ADD.
From here, you can select filters to fix up the colors, brightness,
contrast, sharpen, etc... I usually add brightness/contrast, HSV
adjust, and sharpen.
Same with AUDIO from the tool bar.

The XviD compression settings include a HDTV "Profile @
Level" as well as the (unrestricted) setting. There are Simple
and Advanced Simple profiles ( for low complexity devices)
There are "Home Theater" Profiles ( most likely corresponding
to "Main" Profile) Then a "Cinema Plus" profile (could be "Main"
or it could be "High" Profile, I don't know.) Then the HDTV
which should be "High" Profile. Unrestricted is just that, you
can set it to whatever you want, ( including settings that creates
video that nothing can play.)

For better compatibility, with players, you might want to stick
to the high end of the "Main" Profile. The HDTV profile might
be quite compatible, as well, it cuts out the "High" Profile
options that cause the most problems for players (Qtr Pixel &
GMC) [ Although I was able to have the boxes still checked
after switching to HDTV and the selections becoming grayed
out.] XviD defaults HDTV to 1280x720x30 but even though
the setting is grayed out, you can enter your own image size
and FPS.

I haven't tried it but VLC should play the HDTV profile and
may even be able to play the Unrestricted profile with Qtr Pixel
and GMC ( but most likely only on high end systems.) If you
can get it playing with VLC, you can distribute the player along
with the XviD file.

The two other approaches to HD Video distribution are WMV-
HD and Quicktime.

An update:

I tried Xvid in VirtualDubMod, and it refuses to start, saying
it can't find a statsfile.

I tried Divx and it works for 960x720, but any larger and it
says the input stream is wrong or bad or something.

I used Huffyuv OK at 2k by 1.5k, but the file plays at
1 frame every 10 seconds with that codec and a 3 GHz processor.

Xvid works fine on mine. Did you miss something installing it? Or try
another version of VirtualDub? I'm running VirtualDub-MPEG2 1.6.11
