Default Open Golf on TNTHD vs ABC

I watched a couple hours of The Open on TNTHD this morning and thought
the picture, although maybe not true HD, looked great. When it came
time to switch over to ABC, I tuned to the local affiliates OTA
digital signal. Only one off the subchannels was running a 16x9
screen, but it didn't look nearly as good as the TNT signal from the
STB. I did watch one World Cup game OTA that was stunning so I know
I'm capable of getting a good picture with my indoor antenna.
Comments??

Dave, HD picture will not help UK golf courses. Sand and hay will still look
like cow pasture in HD.

Dave, if you're watching it via OTA, your antenna is doing it's job.
Digital is digital, either you get the signal or not.

It looked the same to me on my local detroit ABC affiliate as it did on
TNTHD (which was very good).

How many subchannels are there for your ABC?

Was it a full frame 16:9 picture? My local ABC affiliate did not
change over to the HD signal until close to an hour into the British
Open broadcast. This was apparently widespread across the US from the
postings on avsforum.com as many local stations were not prepared to
switch to the HD feed at 9 AM ET on Saturday morning.

The parts of the Open that I saw on ABC that were from the HD feed
looked pretty good to me. Not true HD, but better than normal
upconverted SD, even widescreen SD. For those not up on what ABC was
doing, the cameras and equipment at the British were widescreen PAL
576/50i format and ABC upconverted that to 720/60p HD on their HD channel.

TNT-HD is a 1080i channel, so there is that difference. How many
sub-channels does your local ABC station have?

The have two channels. They show up as 3.1 and 3.2 (although on
antennaweb.org they say they are on Channel 8.1).

Yep, but it really looked like a stretched SD signal.

I didn't go back to it after trying the first few minutes (at 8am
CDST)

I did an auto tune with my set (Sharp DLP) and it tuned to four
channels: 3.1 and 3.2 (ABC) and 16.1 and 16.2 (PBS). The ABC analog
channel is 3, but on the antennaweb.org listing, it shows up as 8.
I'm still a little foggy on how this works.
