Default Question on Motorola 6412

I have one of these i bought off of Ebay. It restarts once in awhile and im
thinking its because it's overheating. I work in different houses for my
job as im a contractor, and one of my customers had this same box in his
house. I noticed that although his TV was off, his box was on and i could
hear its fan running from the other room.

Is this normal for this box? Mine is the Motorola 6412/2300 Phase 3.

Im asking this because ive never hear a fan running on mine and i've felt
the top of my box and it's pretty hot. I felt the top of my customers box
and his was not hot.

I'm assuning that mine has a fan but it may not be working. Its off of
warranty so im thinking of opening it up.

Any thoughts?

thanks

I have a 6412 (unsure of which phase) and it runs pretty hot.Had my DVD
player on top of it and had to swap them.

In the summer if I close the door to where all the equipment is the fan
will come on and run for ages.

It's best to leave this box on all the time. And, yes, it runs very
hot. Take the warnings about clearance seriously. It needs at least 2
inches clearance on all sides, top and bottom and cannot be enclosed.

The 6412 Phase III has a built-in fan. Its on the bottom, almost all
the way to the front, and almost centered. Its about 3 in. diameter.

I'm pretty sure the older Phase II box has no fan, but probably needs
one, else why did Motorola put it in the Phase III ?

Cox Cable in Orange County, CA has these and for a year or so they
were total JUNK. They only worked correctly about 1/3 the time. It
turned out the problem was in the software programming, which they
finally fixed in late January 2006. Now the box is almost, but not
quite, perfect. One thing that now happens, on occasion, is that the
audio quits; you need to switch channels to get it back.

I've got a Phase II boxd and it has a fan. I've been considering a
Phase III box but the complaints kept me from switching. It's good to
hear they worked things out.

Hmmm. Very interesting on the Phase II fan. Gee, just when you think
you know everything.

If you're with Cox in O.C., call them and get a Phase III. It also has
(now) a working HDMI output on it, along with 'component.' If you're
not in O.C., call anyway and question your local Cox. Maybe, if you're
lucky, you can get them to give you a straight answer. Once when I
called Coix about a technical issue, and asked to speak to the 'Tech
Support' Mgr., or some such, I was told they did not have a person
like that.
