Default Question for Canadians on Star Choice

I think you misunderstood me. I did set the DSR to 1080i (red
button-front panel) and then set the SD override (480p)from the setup
menu. What I was trying to
say was then my TV saw every signal as 1080i and shut down the DRC,
Same thing happens when I tune an HD channel which is broadcasting an
SD signal--no DRC

When the HD channels are broadcasting an SD signal it is usually still
being broadcast pillar-boxed in a 1080i raster. So you're still gonna get
1080i out of the DSR500 for that. There is no way around this. But when I
tune an SD channel, say 300, then my receiver puts out 480p. My TV can
sense this and switches automatically to that mode.

Sounds logical & it seems to me that the 1080i raster would confuse the DRC. I
too have my option to set default SD to 480p. At that point the DRC says "been
there done it." I still have the cinemotion option (pulldown). But setting the
DSR red button to 1080i disables DRC even if I do NOT invoke the 480p override.
Unique to Sony? Mebbe so!

Possibly. My Samsung CRT set just switches automatically between 1080i and
480p. I can FORCE it to be 1080i for all signals, but then, because my set
is 4:3, I end up with a letter-boxed, pillar-boxed image in center screen,
whereas 480p will fill out the screen. If the signal is anamorphic, such
as many of the ones from my DVD player, I can manually set the aspect to
16:9.

Default Question for Canadians on Star Choice

Another StarChoice question.
I have a DSR500. I note that the later models (DSR505, DSR530) have a DVI
input. Is the PQ really noticeable as compared to component output -- with its
conversion from Digital to Analog? (As opposed to letting the TV do it)

Default Question for Canadians on Star Choice

I thought I would throw this into this thread:

I've been noticing that the HD flag is not always on for HD programming,
especially from CBC and PBS.

If you see a movie listed that you'd like to watch in HD, sometimes it pays
to just tune it in and see (on an HD channel of course).

I've noticed the opposite as well. An HD channel with the HD flag and the
program clearly not

Yeah, that happens too. Most often, that's a problem with the station,
whereas the other thing is a problem between the networks and Star Choice
with the information not being clear enough.

Default Question for Canadians on Star Choice

Anyone know if StarChoice is going to switch to MPEG4? I find their signal a
little too compressed for my taste, especially SD stuff. Is MPEG4 an
improvement in this area?

It SHOULD be. I don't know when they plan on switching, though. I would
support such a move, even though it would kill my old 921 receivers, which
I would have to replace with something a tad newer.
