Default DTV for Small kitchen TV?

Hello everyone,

I want to fire my cable company and go with OTA digital. The problem
I'm having is that I need a small TV in the kitchen. I cannot find a
TV 15" or smaller (screen size) with a built in digital tuner. I don't
want to but a separate receiver because it will take up extra space.
Any suggestions?

TIA,

S

AFAIK, built-in ATSC tuners have not gotten down to the small TVs yet
because of the smaller cost margin for small TVs. The FCC has set a
deadline of March 1, 2007 for all TVs down to 13" made after that date
to have built-in ATSC tuners. So by next year, such TVs will be
available. You may be too early for this. Maybe some will show up this
year as part of annual product cycle updates ahead of the FCC deadline.

A laptop with inline USB ATSC receiver.

A laptop running wireless off a MythTV server.

Either of these will provide HDTV quality or close to it. Running behind
the MythTV server will provide a complete entertainment center with HD
DVR on the laptop.

Not sure about smaller ones yet, but as mentioned by "me" (not I)
all (or most) will have digital tuners built in by March of 2007. I
suspect you'll see 13-15" models before Christmas, so be patient if you
want basic digital TV cheap.

The smallest screen that I have seen lately with an internal ATSC tuner is
26", so they are finding their way down in size, but I don't think that any
manufacturers are getting ahead of the FCC mandated timetable.

According to document FCC 05-190 at
http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_publi...C-05-190A1.pdf

"By this action, the Commission is modifying its rules to advance the date
on which new television receivers with screen sizes 13-24" and certain other
TV receiving devices such as VCRs and digital video recorders must include
the capability to receive broadcast digital television signals from the
current date of July 1, 2007 to March 1, 2007. The Commission is also
amending its rules to apply the digital television reception capability
requirement to new receivers with screen sizes smaller than 13" on this same
schedule. The DTV reception requirement, which also often is termed the "DTV
tuner requirement," is being implemented under an approach that applies it
first to large screen receivers and then progressively to smaller screen
receivers and other devices over a period of several years.1 The
modifications made herein affect the final step of this phase-in plan.2 With
these changes, the scheduled implementation plan will provide for all new TV
receiver equipment to include digital reception capability as of March 1,
2007."

Looks like March of next year is the magic date.

Actually a few exist with ATSC tuners now, but probably not the
reasonably priced ones yet. So as you say expect to see them closer to
the March 2007 date.

Which models from what manufacturers? AFAIK, the smallest with an ATSC tuner are 26 or 27" models.
