Default Sony?

Sony either has a bad PR or a truly bad problem. Last night on AOTS they
were discussing whether or not the PS3 (and maybe BluRay in general) will
have a technology that will make it impossible to rent, share, or sell used
disks.

If not true, Sony needs to squash this VERY loudly; if true the PS3 is DOA.

I thought that got debunked on the net like a month or two ago. They
DID squash it then, though not very loudly. And I just saw it show up
in the local newspaper (no, I don't pay for those damn things, I read
someone else's) yesterday.

It's not like Sony doesn't already have enough bullet holes in its feet
about the PS3 already. (can you say "not enough blue lasers, so they
have to use them all for PS3s instead of Blu-Ray players?") They don't
need to go switching to a bazooka.

Blu-Ray is however capable of making one sick when they see how little
picture quality it delivers for two to three times the price. It looks
like Pioneer will release a player in Sept that will be ALMOST as good as HD
DVD for only 1500 dollars.

Greed has killed both formats, though HD DVD had the best chance of
capturing some market share, due to the fact that the Discs can be
made on existing production lines at little or no extra cost,,and the
players can be made within reasonable technical variablity - the Blue
Rays are so cutting edge, that if you sneeze or look cross ways at
them they dont work..hence the long delay in introducing a player.
unfortunately, the companies in this market want to charge you 1500
bucks for a semi functional player, and 25 bucks for bad movies in HD
so you can see the bad actors nose hairs - well maybe you can.

Fact is,,the standard 480i DVDS are more than good enough to please 99
percent of all consumer, using any size screen,,,with forgiving 50
buck players, and 10 buck discs,,,,

Note the grand success of Super Audio and DVD - A formats for
recorded: sound to see the future of both HD DVD formats,,,

Old news.

Originally, Blu-Ray was supposed to have key revocation and serialization on
every disk. Stores didn't want that because it would turn into revolving
door of returns and warehouses full of unsellable machines.

The implication is that Sony's new plan is that games and movies will be
downloaded and locked to your PS3. Which means not only no used game sales,
but also that you can't take a game or movie to a friend's house (without
the whole machine) and stores like Best Buy who act as Sony pimps now will
be totally cut out of the loop on game sales and possibly even movies.

How excited about the PS3 will big retailers be when they figure this out?

Of course, it doesn't have to be that way. Companies like Valve (Half Life,
Counter Strike, Day of Defeat) use a system where you can log into your
account from any PC and play. They could even make an online market so you
could transfer your game or movie accounts to others but I doubt they will.

You know I have read several die hard data storage groupies posting
that they simply must have a 25 G recordable disc,,,??

Now think a moment,,Sony cant make a player,,,so think how reliable a
burner would be,,,,!!

and my second thought - why do you need 25G on a disc,,??? You can
buy a 500 G, and soon a 1000 g hard drive for $400 dollars or less -
that less than the 20 recordable Blue ray discs you would need to
store the same amount of data (assuming they even worked,,,).

4.5 G recordable DVDs cost about 20 cents now, dual layer 8 G ones
about 2 bucks - and they work,,,,so why not just put 25 Gigs of data
on 5 or 6 20 cent discs,,??

I think the market for recordable Blue ray or HD DVD discs is even
more vanishingly small that the market for HD movies,,,,

All very good points. What are your thoughts for the new drives as
large capacity data storage rather than video devices?

Not only that, but HDTVs with 3:2 pulldown and conversion to 480p make 480i DVDs
even better, as would an upconverting player.
