Hi all, looking for some advice on choosing a decent plasma (or lcd or crt)
with HD capability, about 37-42 inches screen size. 2-3 grand to spend. Would also like recommendations on a surround sound speaker system and amplifier...about a grand to spend here. My lounge is country style so need the speakers to be unobtrusive as possible to keep other half happy! I use sky and have a decent DVD player. Cheers in advance! Steve |

Don't rule out a DLP rear projector either if you're not set on a flat panel type. They're cheaper than either plasma or LCD and better in many ways. Not as good as a CRT, though. ;-) -- *The more I learn about women, the more I love my car Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

It mostly depends on the number of pixels that the screen can display.
Apart from available programme material, the problem with true HDTV is basically that people do not realise that you need a large screen TV. The following diagram shows the relative sized screen that should be used for HDTV, assuming the same pixel size and so the same seating distance for a normal TV: (view with Fixed Width fonts set) [-------------------------,-----------------------,--------------------] | | | | | | | | | | | | | Normal TV | | | | Screen Size | | | | 4:3 | | | | (eff 720x576) | | | | | | | | | | | |_________________________] | | | | | | | | | 1365 x768 | | |_________________________________________________] | | | | | | | | | | HDTV 1920x1080 | |----------------------------------------------------------------------| So if you have a 68 cm normal TV, then you would need approx a 170 cm HDTV. Notice that the 1365x768 TV does not get close to the full HDTV, yet that is the resolution of the TV sets that most stores are trying to sell as HDTV. Steve Without doubt I would recommend Pioneer plasma 43". I have had one for 2/3 years. Probably the best pictures I have ever seen in a home. Mine cost £4.5K but they are about £2.5K now. |

"Wdino" wrote in message ... Apart from available programme material, the problem with true HDTV is basically that people do not realise that you need a large screen TV. Very true! I got HD on day one and was very impressed with the HD pictures on my 43" Pioneer plasma. After a few days experience I concluded that the pictures were so good that 43" was not really big enough for good quality HD material! After considerable research into projector systems I have ended up with a DLP HD projector and a 76" (diag) pull down screen. The pictures with suitable HD source material (e.g. Planet Earth, BBC Wimbledon/World Cup, some Sky movies) are spectacular. One movie-buff friend of mine said "My God! It looks just like IMAX)". The projector is ceiling mounted in my normal sized room and the screen is ceiling mounted so that it pulls down in front of the plasma screen when necessary. When the screen is retracted the overall appearance of the room is virtually unaltered and visitors frequently do not notice the screen or projector unless they are pointed out. The projector is used only when justified by the source material, otherwise the plasma is used for normal viewing. The total cost of the projector* system was £1650, which is less than half of what I paid for the plasma 2.5 years ago! *ThemeScene HD72i DLP projector 1300 lumens see: http://www.projectorpoint.co.uk/proj...ene_HD72i.html |

I concur Ours is about 6 months old now and the picture is stunning. HD is beyond compare and regular DTV still gets visitors remarking on how superb the picture is. -- http://gymratz.co.uk - Best Gym Equipment & Bodybuilding Supplements UK. http://trade-price-supplements.co.uk - TRADE PRICED SUPPLEMENTS for ALL! http://fitness-equipment-uk.com - UK's No.1 Fitness Equipment Suppliers. http://Water-Rower.co.uk - Worlds best prices on the Worlds best Rower. |
