Default HD channels on an SD digital TV?

What do I see if I have an SD digital TV and tune it to a channel
with HD programming? Nothing? A down-converted SD picture? Smoke?

You see the picture in a lower resolution.

Last fall when converting to HD I installed my satellite dish and receiver
first, then after getting that going I went out and bought my TV. So I did
have the opportunity to try exactly that on my old-style Trinitron. The HD
channels did display, but they were weird-looking and of course had black
bars top and bottom. Worse than the SD channels as I recall.

You're talking about tuning an HD channel with the ATSC tuner in your
satellite box and watching the video on your old analog TV, aren't
you?

I think I have a handle on what most HD satellite receivers can do,
but I was wondering what sort of mode conversions a stand-alone SD
digital TV could do.

It must have been something VERY wrong with the way you set it up.

Just a regular component or composite connection (forget which). Now of
course I didn't attempt any adjustments, because I was getting my new set
the next day.

Component or composite makes a big difference. A letterboxed picture
(black bars top and bottom) makes sense for a 16x9 picture displayed of
a 4x3 screen.

Please remember I wasn't trying to produce a good viewing experience. I was
merely making sure that I was receiving HD channels in preparation for my
new set the next day. The connection was probably composite since as I
recall I used the front plugs on the TV which I think were composite. I've
given the TV away so can't check. Anyway the thing that I found interesting
was that the old set could make any sense of the signal at all, which it
could. Cheers.

Still, there should be a choice. A better designed TV or STB would give
you an option to display the full 16:9 letterboxed, or zoom in to full
height (and lose the sides), or maybe also part way between.
