RichardH wrote: So how does one determine whether it is true HD or widescreen SD without sitting 1 foot from the screen? My StarChoice satellite receiver has a number of "HD" channels, and my Sony XS955 will clearly state the broadcast is 1080i, when it appears to me to be not. Remember when stereo came out--there was this neat little red light that let you know when a broadcast was being sent stereo? If you can not tell HD from SD, you should have saved your money. Steve |

A careful reading of my original post would have revealed to a discerning person
that I was curious because my XS955 DRC function is so good, it makes SD transmission look like HD when viewed from a distance of over 4 feet, and I wondered if SD widescreen transmission could lure one into thinking it was HD at normal viewing distance. Under that distance, yes, one can tell, especially by looking for moire effects, perhaps aliasing, and objects in the distance. But who wants to spend their lives ascertaining all that on every given occasion--or for that matter, being glued to a screen less than 4 feet away? Only an ego trip! I simply stated it would be nice--not necessary-- if the electronics could give you an indication. After all, nobody needed the little red light to tell them a broadcast was in MTS stereo (or as my HT does--that a broadcast is in Prologic or 5.1) but it was handy--in case that station was sending out a particular program in mono. (perhaps giving the impression that the station did not possess stereo capabilities.) On another note---this NG is noted for its politeness. Your perfunctory supercilious response to my post tells far more about you than it does me! -- All the Best Richard Harison "Steve Sherman" wrote in message .. . Your perfunctory supercilious response to my post tells far more about you than it does me! Sorry, I'm not a discerning person. You didn't state a question. You stated your observations. Well, maybe the question was; "Why does my HDTV not tell me the resolution of the source material being broadcast"? My guess is that they figured you could tell and if you could not, all the better. Enjoy your HDTV. It is even better than the step from round to square tubes. Steve |

But my HDTV is a round tube. Circuit City told me it was the latest innovation
