all digital stations transmitting from Sutro daytime outages 7/10-7/13

I wanted to alert you to some planned digital transmission daytime only
outages for all stations transmitting from Sutro Tower next week. While
installation work for another station is being performed, all stations
will need to temporarily turn off their DTV for a portion of each day.
The start time and duration of each outage is not known at this time,
but all stations will be back on the air by each evening. The work is
currently planned to take no more than 4 days, Mon 7/10 through Thurs 7/13.

During this time, KQED digital transmission over Comcast Cable will not
be affected.

Here it is the evening of 7/8 and the following stations from Sutro are
off the air:

call chan freq
---- ---- ----
KTVU-DT 2 56
KCNS-DT 38 39
KCSM-DT 43 43

I wouild guess that something broke. All the expected analog signals
from Sutro are still on the air. KCSM ( 60 ) shut down their analog
San Bruno transmitter some time back (I couldn't receive it here anyway).

Let's just hope that all these bugs are worked out by 2009, or OTA
will have big problems. When they go down there will be no analog
backups.

The stations share one of 4 antennas. Two to three stations per
antenna. At the end of the transition, antennas will be replaced at the
top of the tower and they'll be back to an antenna per station with the
backup being the shared antennas. That's my best guess. Don't hold your
breath while waiting for the city permits to be issued.

The repairs to Digital Antenna Section C (the part shared by KCSM, KTVU
and KCNS) were completed late today, so daytime digital OTA transmission
should be back to normal.
