I've got the Oppo with my Sony HD set. It's awesome. The picture
quality is sharp yet smooth.

The greatest strength of this Oppo player is in its Genesis/Faroudja
chipset that processed video. The upconversion is ok, but the video
processing is outstanding.

Good Luck!

the Faroudja chipset is it's greatest strength AND weakness. when coupled
with an exceptional transfer, as is the case with the LOTR/Star Wars series,
spectacular results, indistinguishable from compressed satellite/cable HD
movies, can and do occur. when coupled with a garbage transfer however, the
output is utterly unwatchable (the original Matrix looks absolutely horrid).

since I have a backup dvd player (xbox 360) for the times when I receive a
movie that makes my Oppo barf, I have no complaints, but if this is going to
be your sole player, beware that some movies will look terrible due to the
macroblocking bug inherent in the Faroudja chipset employed in the Oppo.

Sony HDTV and WOW!! It truly has a spectacular image at 1080i Best purchase
I have made in A/V for quite some time. I reccomend this player highly.

Good News!

BTW, I have yet to see the macroblocking problem with poor transfers.
As a matter of fact, I have yet to run across a dvd that didn't look
outstanding on my Oppo.

Cheers!

You wouldn't happen to have a link to their website?

I'm not the original poster, but:

http://www.oppodigital.com/

I bought mine from Amazon to get the free shipping. It came with the current
firmware, the new remote, and both DVI-DVI and DVI-HDMI cables.

Oppo has a big fan base over at avsforum.com. Real people answer your support
email questions within minutes. Frequent firmware updates. I am very pleased.

You've mentioned this twice now - I'm going to have to give it a try.

Cheers!

this is probably the worst example I've seen, but the macroblocking issue
isn't uncommon in other movies, just less pronounced. most times, the movie
is still watchable, albeit with the shimmering distraction throughout a
scene, and occasionally, as with the Matrix, the entire movie is rendered
completely unwatchable, which is a shame for me, as this is one of my all
time faves.
