CableCard Dead ?

From the July 3 New York Times article by Erica Taub:

1. Less than 3 % of the CableCard ready sets that have been sold are
actually using it. Only 170,000 CableCards are actually in use.

2. Sharp has reduced the number of of CableCard sets from 10 to 2. Philips
from 7 to 3, and Sony from 4 to 2. Only the high end sets seem to offer it
in the new models.

3. LG and Panasonic expect to offer 2 way CableCard sets this year, but the
specification won't even be ready. They expect a more realistic date to be
07, 08, or even 09.

4. A Mr. Doherty from Envisioneering is quoted as saying "The CableCard is
essentially dead. It will go down in histore like the Edsel".

It always seemed dead to me - something like 0.01% of the
capabilities of a "real" cable box, and TVs that support
it have a hefty price increase added to provide that support.

Gee, I wonder why the CableCard never worked out.
Bet the Cable companies are happy they won.
Just wasnt a money maker for them.

Cox charged $2/mo but had a $60 installation fee. I can get the HD, all pay
per views (other peoples) and a few digital channels without it.
