good question
does it matter if your tv is 720 or 1080 (mine is 720)?
i run it at 0000 & let the tv convert.
is this right?

I'm not sure if the DSR500 can actually output 720p. It won't do it
to my TV, but then my TV cannot read 720p anyway

so how do you know it isn't?

I can't set the DSR500 to 720p. I'm not sure if that's because it's
reading the TV somehow and just not going where the TV won't go.

The early DSR500s are not capable of outputting 720p. The later ones
can.

Default Question for Canadians on Star Choice

On the Sony HD CRT sets, the DRC (for SD signals) allows for 3 settings:
interlaced, progressive, & cinemotion. (3:2 pulldown).
I assume the interlaced is 1080i, but does anyone know whether the progressive
setting is 480p or 720p?

Which setup menu, please? In the DSR500 or your TV. If TV, what do you have?
thanks

For my TV, I force the output to 1080i and then in the setup menu, set the
SD override to 480p. That works just fine for me. I tried using 1080i for
everything, but I got some aliasing on SD sigs.

In the receiver. The TV will have a native setting, but may be able to
read other sigs. If your TV is a CRT model then the odds are that its
native setting is 1080i.

It is indeed a CRT. Would setting the DSR500 to override SD signals to 480p in
effect cancel the line doubler in my Sony XS955? (Sony calls it DRC) Thanks

No, it would not. The line doubler is probably active in both 480i and
480p modes. Mine is. You get a cleaner, more flicker-free signal with
480p

Tried it that way (forcing the DSR500 to 1080i) and this problem arose: Since
my Sony CRT (XS955) interpreted any signal it got from the DSR as 1080i it
disabled its DRC functions. So I set the DSR to native (0000) and overrode SD
signals to 480p. Still wish my older DSR500 had 720p. (sigh)

There's a place in the DSR500 setup menu that will allow you to force the
override to 480p while retaining 1080i as the main setting. I never really
tried native on mine as my TV would just go all screwy of "native" was ever
720p.

I think you misunderstood me. I did set the DSR to 1080i (red button-front
panel) and then set the SD override (480p)from the setup menu. What I was
trying to
say was then my TV saw every signal as 1080i and shut down the DRC, Same thing
happens when I tune an HD channel which is broadcasting an SD signal--no DRC
