Anyone have any experience or knowledge of Uninterruptable Power Supplies
and surge protectors for large screen projection TV's? I have a Hitachi 60" LCD projection TV and I'm considering a UPS/Surge protection device. There are specific "home theater" units with additional features as well as standard UPS units for computer protection. The computer types are of course cheaper. Can they also be used for simple backup with my TV? What size power rating and joule capacity should I look for? I'm also considering the Monster HTUPS 500. Anybody familiar with this product? What do you think of it? Thanks in advance for any help. Howard |

It doesn't matter what's plugged into it, you just want clean regulated power from a UPS. I've bought several hundred over the years. I've got 3 in the house now. I have a Hitachi 60" LCD projection TV and I'm considering a UPS/Surge protection device. There are specific "home theater" units with additional features as well as standard UPS units for computer protection. The computer types are of course cheaper. Can they also be used for simple backup with my TV? I sure hope so since I've been using them for that for years.:-) What size power rating and joule capacity should I look for? That depends on how much power everything you are going to hook to it uses. If you're only going to put the TV on, check the max wattage in the TV specs. I'm also considering the Monster HTUPS 500. Anybody familiar with this product? What do you think of it? I've seen the OEM version of this somewhere for about half that price. At that price, I didn't even waste my time reading the specs. There are regulated and unregulated UPS's. Regulated with surge protection constanly runs on conditioned power. Crap like APC Back-Ups are unregulated and run on wall power til it drops below whatever you set it for (the one good feature this unit has). So you want a regulated UPS. Other important things are how easy the battery/batteries is to change, and the size of the battery. Battery cost vary greatly depending on size. Some smaller ones cost more than more widely used larger ones. And the battery will need to be changed about every 2 years. I've had a great little Powercom 650VA unit I've been using for many years, but changing the batteries (it has 2) is a real pita. Avoid units like this if you can. The last UPS I bought was a Belkin F6C625-SER. I've had it several years and it's been very reliable. The battery was easy to change although the last time the battery needed replacing I hooked up a much larger battery outside the case for a longer run time. I didn't want to spend 4 times as much for a larger UPS when all I really wanted was a longer run time. if you aren't a cheap sob like me then just get a 1500VA unit and it'll probably give you at least an hour of runtime on you TV asssuming your Tv draws about 300W. Wouldn't touch the Monster unit or an APC Back-Ups unit, and the APC Smart units are way overpriced IMO. Belkin and Powercom offer good value. And there's probably a few other good choices. Just make sure it has regulated power and you should be fine. -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html Usenet alt.video.ptv.mythtv My server http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php HD Tivo S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm |

Like expensive filtering or line conditioners, it just is not necesssary in most cases. You can get good solid surge protection for a.c. and all incoming lines for under $100 from Tripplite or Panamax. Make sure your electrical system, cable, sat, or antenna grounds are done properly, are tight and clean. Wothour proper grounding any protection is less effective. Adding a whole house suppression unit at the electrical panel is a good idea as well. Leonard |

I have the Monster 1000 for both my LCDs and there still alive after a
lightning bolt struck my phone pole in front of my house. Meanwhile many other appliances and electronic devices died. So I am happy. And I didnt pay much, about 120.00 on ebay. They were brand new. Howard,
For some time now, my Samsung 56" DLP HDTV, DirecTV DVR (HR10-250) as well as a Samsung DVD/VCR player and Yamaha 5.1 home theater sound system have gotten power from an APC BackUPS 550. Here in Florida a UPS unit is an absolute necessity for all electronics due to frequent brief power interruptions. Some of them are due to lightning in the vicinity and others probably due to load-balancing switching done by the power company. Most of these interruptions are very brief and would otherwise not be much of a problem except that the satellite receiver takes several minutes to reboot and resynchronize, plus any recording would be discontinued and presumably not resumed automatically. The DLP TV also takes a while to restart. The UPS bridges such brief interruptions and prevents these restarts. My unit will run the entire system for 5 to 10 minutes or so, which gives me time to shutdown in an orderly manner if the outage is longer, such as when a hurricane knocks out power for several days. As others have mentioned, there are numerous issues to consider when selecting a UPS. I have bought several APC as well as other brands for use with computers and have found them all to be quite satisfactory. I would recommend watching the ads from the various office supply stores and taking advantage of any special offers. For your system a 600VA unit or larger should be adequate. I wouldn't waste my money on overpriced "Monster" units. Unfortunately higher rated units do not necessarily provide much more running time, since the power rating refers to the power handling capability of the electronic components and does not specify the battery capacity. Since many units use 12V sealed lead-acid batteries, hooking up an external high-capacity battery would provide significantly longer running time. However, if outages are so long that a larger battery is needed, perhaps a generator would be a good alternative and could power additional important appliances, such as the refrigerator, during such lengthy outages. The UPS would presumably keep the electronics powered long enough to hook up and start the generator. Good luck! "Monster. Ugh"
"Anything with Monster is over priced" "Skip the UPS unless you have very frequent power outages. " "I have the Monster 1000 for both my LCDs and there still alive after a lightning bolt struck " "home theater sound system have gotten power from an APC BackUPS 550. " Thanks guys. Lots of info, lots of opinions. I thought the Monster was overpriced but I really didn't know if a computer type UPS would work with my system. My concern was also addressed by Don Moe (thanks, Don) as I too live in Florida. Central Florida to be exact, which is the lightning capital of North America. We get lots of power outages and I'm sure surges, whih I'm not aware of but I'd rather not become aware the hard way. I'll start searching for a good deal on a UPS/Surge unit in the 500 to 650 volt range. I appreciate all the help. Happy 4th to all of you. Howard "Howard" wrote in message . .. I have the 70" Director series version of this TV. I have the 500 APC on
mine and another to run the DVR and other defices. Keeps the system safe from surges, allows for a controlled shutdown in the event of power outage. "Howard" wrote in message . ..
