Would you bypass SD tuners and just go straight for external HD tuner if doing above? Not only would I, I did. Analog NTSC sucks big time compared to digital ATSC. Of course, here, all stations have been broadcasting digital for some time. Check where you live. I have digital stations near Just seems like not a lot of HD tuners for computers are available in the US. Yes? |

You might see this in the future but right now, you probably won't find any for ATSC. Try back when it's manditory to have an ATSC tuner in small sets. I think that's Feb or March 2007, or maybe 2008. Definately by Feb. 2009.:-) Still, for about $800 now, you could outfit a notebook PC with all you need to have a pretty impressive portable system. -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html Usenet alt.video.ptv.mythtv My server http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php HD Tivo S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm |

Yeah I'm sure you are correct in that it wont be in small sets till then However I think manufacturers are missing a market here. and here is what I mean Why not build a current small 13" TV with built in PVR with just enough hard drive to store say one days worth of time shifting? I don't need a PVR with 120gig or bigger hard drive in it. Don't want to 'store" programs...only want to time shift them then record over them Basically it would be something like a small TV with an iPod size hard drive in it. Doesn't even have to be HD as far as I'm concerned... just small and portable and yes... you are correct that a laptop is my only solution for now |

Yeah. it's called a notebook PC with a usb HDTV tuner. Now I don't know if anyone makes a notebook with a built in atsc tuner. But since you have to have an antenna anyway, the small USB tuner isn't an issue IMO. Pick your notebook. Pick your tuner. Pick your antenna. Done. And fairly cheap too considering it's not just limited to Tv. Great Idea Wes, got any suggestions on PC Card tuners? I have a V-Box usb 2.0 atsc tuner. It works really well, I use it with beyond tv software ( you will need this or another brand of software if you don't have XP media edition. and I use a zenith silver sensor antenna. I am picking up ota stations from about 50 miles away. Striker |
