Default Mobile TV, eSurvey

My name is David Sobel and I am a postgraduate student interested in
the use of mobile phones here in the UK. I actually was in Japan last
year, and was surprised in the huge difference in use of mobile phones,
so I'm trying to study this at the Department of Media and
Communications at the London School of Economics.

I was wondering if many people have tried mobile digital TV like the
services Vodafone offers, and if it's any good. When I was in Japan, I
tried those services, but reception was often spotty, and overall not
so usable.

Also, I plan to do an online survey about mobile use in the UK soon,
and would really appreciate help from anyone who could spare five
minutes. For your time, I will raffle off a 20 pound amazon.co.uk
voucher for anyone that participates.

I'll post a link to the survey in a few days, but if there are any
questions about this research or the survey, I'd be happy to answer
them!

David

Try reading various complaints on forums and in newsgroups. Also study the
technical side and how it is funded to see why it's crap.
I do hope that your survey does not ask for names or addresses of phone
numbers as a spamming list would,

Thanks! Yeah, I will definitely be looking at technical/industry side,
though I'm really curious about the user experience and perceptions of
the mobile phones and their services.

As for the survey, it's purely academic, completely anonymous, and the
email address will be optional at the end if you want to enter the
raffle, or be notified of the results.

Is there a demand for mobile TV?
The reason I ask is that pocket TV's have been available for years and I
have never seen anyone using one apart from at sports events (mainly
cricket).

Is it maybe a case of the tail wagging the dog?
(The telecom companies telling us we want something when we don't really).

The main problem with watching any device is that you can;t do it while you
are walking or you will bump into things.
You can't use them while driving.
It might work on buses or trains, but reception would be the issue.
I think we can forget the tube!

Also why should we, the public, pay for a service over mobile phones when
the technology exists and has been proven for a mobile form of DTT which
is resistant to artifact and cross channel interference.

You might think we should pay because it is a carried phone service but we
already pay for a DTT service that is poorer than our analogue service. An
analogue service which can be received on mobile TV's right now. Why cant
we have a mobile DTT service of similar quality.

Yes I know the government wants to sell the frequency resources we already
have paid for.

Mumble mumble winge winge groan groan.

Do check first with someone who understands statistical analysis and who can
talk you out of what is almost certainly a waste of time.

Perhaps there isn't much of a demand for it yet, though I wonder if it
was cumbersome to carry around a device just for mobile TV. With the
convergence of TV into something people would carry anyway, it seems
like watching mobile TV would become much more convenient.

The main problem with watching any device is that you can;t do it while you
are walking or you will bump into things.

Definitely some problems with watching mobile TV while traveling, but
maybe there would be some interest in it for downtimes - like when
waiting for someone at a restaurant, or taking a break from some
activity. Content structure might have to change though.

You seem to be undecided wether to top post or bottom post. Could you
please stick to bottom posting which makes it easier to read threads.

Dave
