I designed a similar device - it's USB based instead (which generally
makes for a less troublesome install) and injects the signal directly
into the RF2 port rather than using IR, which is an awful lot more
reliable and less fiddly to get working.

There's also versions for people with more than one sky box, and a
serial version that can control multiple boxes too.

Nice one!

USB = good! my comptuer doesn't even have a serial port

I don't suppose anyone has made software for it to work with Mac OS X?

duh.. I've just realised I can buy a new Mac Mini, put windows on it
(parallels does 'virtualisation' software to run windows) and get some
PVR software..

...or should I just buy a second hand tivo from eBay?

As other people have pointed out, you can do this from the Services
menu.. And have been able to for some time.

Never understood these devices that sent a 'Backup' every now and
again.. Surely that'd be a pain if you were navigating the EPG or
something similar at the time the 'Backup' went off?

(e.g. can you tell it to go to Channel 0101 at 7pm? if so how?)

I don't know about that one but I use
http://www.skyeye.force9.co.uk/skyeyepc.htm which has the advantage of not
needing an infra red wand stuck on the front of the Skybox. There's also
some software that will do what you want available on their website for free
download. I don't know if it's any better than the one above but I've been
using it for the last 5 months on my PC without any problems and would
recommend it.

I bought one of these a while ago and can highly recommend it.. Very
well built, and does what it says.

Had a play at the time with it at the time, but at the moment it's just
sitting in a box. Keep meaning to hook it up to my Linux webserver along
with a video feed of the Sky+ box so I can schedule recordings remotely.
Possible with VNC, but not a tidy solution.. Doing it all from a web
page would be wonderful!

it was considered a lesser evil to having red blobs on everything you
recorded.
it's a moot point now sky have put the option in their software.

The smart one that I have also has an IR receiver so it doesn't send a 'Backup'
command when you have been using the remote.
