Default dvd upscaling?

I heard that if you play your standard dvd's on a HD DVD player attached to
a HD TV the player will upscale your ordinary dvd's and they will come out
showing in HD quality. Is this true or is it they will play at near HD
quality and not be as good as true HD broadcasts?

thanks
Mike

Some DVD players will upscale, not all. Those with HDTV outputs should. One
reason for this option is that many HDTV's don't look as good working off
standard resolution signals as bog standard TV's do, especially LCD's. So
with such a player you can compare upscalers and use which one is best.

It can't show detail that isn't there. It may be able to output a signal with
the extra lines to conform to the standard required by the display, but it
will have to "invent" some of the information on those lines because it won't
be present in the original material. Think of what the "digital zoom" does in
a camera.

i see so i guess its a case of if you want to see your dvd movie collection
in true HD quality you will need to rebuy them all again when they come out
in HD format!

Don't forget that you can't improve the original. GIGO.

Of course! New formats are always very popular with content providers
for that very reason. And whilst some HD material will undoubtedly look
impressive on the right display, I suspect there may be a lot of back
catalogue transfers that will be HD in name only...

As for 'upscaling', bear in mind that your HD display will have to do
that anyway in order to display SD material. The only issue is whether
or not the upscaling DVD player can do a better job. It ain't
necessarily so.
