Default Is this the cheapest way to Get Free Digital Satellite?

I'd like to get my parents onto digital TV so they can benefit from
widescreen TV and the greater channel choice. As they are not in a
freeview area I have worked out that the cheapest way for me to do this
is not the £150 via www.freesatfromsky.com but rather to take out a
Sky package taking advantage of two offers and cancelling after 1 year.

Offer 1: First 3 months half price

So over a year, the total cost is £7.50 x 3 months = £22.50 and then
9 months x £15 bringing the total to £157.50

Offer 2: Join On-line for a £10 credit

Applying this credit reduces the yearly cost to £147.50 which is
£2.50 cheaper than FreeSatFromSky.

Plus, the advantages of this approach is that you get
1) Extra channels for 12 months (I would go for News and Events Mix and
Knowledge Mix)
2) A brand new Sky Box rather than a re-conditioned one

Before I go ahead and ordered, have I calculated this correctly - is
this the best/cheapest way to get my folks digital TV, or have I missed
some T&Cs or are there offers that beat even this.

Advice would be appreciated.

If your folks have a PC, a digital TV card costs 40 pounds or so, and a dish + LNB say
30 more.
The PS has a video out.
BBC1, 2, 3, 4, ITV 1, 2, 3 , 4 all on Astra FTA plus a LOT more other channels.
And, with the PC, you can record and timeshift too, edit it, perhaps burn to a DVD.

If your DIY skills are up to it a 2nd hand digibox box from ebay is probably
cheaper.

Just make sure that you really can cancel the contract so that it ends after
exactly 12 months

The Freeview reception predictors are not always accurate. You may find that
reception is in fact possible, see uk.tech.digital-tv.

Potentially more expensive in the long run when they don't want to give
up the 300 channels of crap

nice as a bonus, but who would want that as their main solution - especially
with the free to view card requiring channels.

Yes Dave, that is pretty much your best bet. I see some others have
suggested more technical ways to get digital TV, but if your parents are
anything like mine where techie stuff is concerned, the simpler the better
is the best option : ) So yes, go for it...... A new system, a choice of
channels for 12 months and the cheapest option overall.

Good luck

AFAIK Freesatfromsky also gets you a new box.

It looks like it. Don't forget to cancel after 11 months.

Default Is this the cheapest way to Get Free Digital Satellite?

Hi guys,

I phoned FreeSatFromSky http://www.freesatfromsky.co.uk on 0870 240
5651 to find out about how much it was for 'Free HDTVSat From Sky'
to watch the World Cup in HDTV from the BBC and they told me about some
offers on FreeSatFromSky.

They offer a subscription of 2 Sky mixes for a one off payment of £120
for the year. This can be cancelled after month 11, so basically you
are getting the minimum package for £10/month. I'm going to arrange
this for my folks as that is £30 cheaper than FSFS.

On the FreeSatFromSky phone line they also have some Sky beating
offers, for example:

1. If you have been a Sky subscriber and since cancelled, you can
re-join and get a half price subscription for 6 months.
2. If you have been a FreeSatFromSky customer for more than a year you
can join Sky and get the same half price subscription for 6 months.

Apparently these offers are better than those available from sky.com

We also talked about HDTV and it seems even if you don't subscribe to
Sky as well as a £299 box charge there payment of £10/month.
Apparently this is because the HDTV box has a 160GB hard disk drive and
Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound.

The guy advised me if I just wanted HDTV for BBC TV then I would be
better off going to the high street and buying a HDTV box from an
independent satellite retailer.

Hope others find this information useful.

Cheers,

David

Hi David,

I phoned to cancel Sky and it seems the *Half Price for 6 months* is offered
to those as well (hoping they'll stay of course)
Going off this being standard practise, We really know that Sky could do
this with ALL subscribers (I guess that's the real price they'd charge if
under pressure from competitors)

So the price they charge at the moment is effectively double what Sky
channels are worth!!!

They gave me Sky+ sub for free though as well because I mentioned I've NEVER
recorded an actual Sky One programme since being with them because of the
on-screen graffiti :-)))

When they mentioned the half price offer, I said "That'll give me time to
put up my aerial for my freeview box"...At that point,They offered to drop
the £10.00 recording fee as well...I just hummed and ahhh'ed and mentioned
it's still expensive for on-screen logo's,Adverts and multiple repeats, I
was passed through to another person in accounts who upped the offer to 12
months.

LOL!, I then said "Oh that'll give me chance to get a freeview box with Hard
disc recording for free", I took the offer obviously as I'm watching less
and less TV as it is.

T.W.
