Hello, Wonder if anyone can tell me if the problem i have can be fixed easily or should I just ditch the tv and buy another one?
I have Sony Trinitron KV-X2552U tv. Unfortunately and suddenly the colour picture will become black and white, maybe for a few seconds or usually for a couple of hours. Occasionally if you turn the tv off and on again (either remote or on the tv) the colour picture will return for a short while. There is no consistency for when it turns black and white and when it returns and it will do this throughout the time the tv is on. However, subtitles, channel indicator , volume control and teletext will all appear in colour all the time. I've tried changing cables and just got a new Ariel (needed one anyway) but the problem is still there. Can anyone help Thanks SHook |

It basically won't stay repaired as the updated IC it requires (the PAL colour seperator chip) is no longer available. The best fix is (as Bill mentioned) is to connect it via the RGB scart to an RGB out Freeview or Sky box. This bypasses the faulty circuit. Dave |

CPC is showing SCTDA4510 (unbranded) in stock (£1.37) at the moment so maybe not all bad news. But what identifies it as 'updated'? Easily the best solution, Bill is your man :-) I don't know nowt abaht tellys. To prove it I have to tell you that the other day I installed an Evesham widescreen wall mounted thing for someone (as a favour). No problem with analogue and with the scart inputs, but having read the instructions and the spec most carefully I concluded that the set did not have DTT. I was a bit doubtful however because the instructions contradicted themselves in other respects, so I messed around for ages trying to make the thing switch to DTT and do an autotune, with no success. Anyway, the customer came home and fiddled with the remote and did something totally illogical (I can't recall just exactly what) and bugger me the damn thing switched to DTT and we were able to tune it in. That made me look a total fool of course. However, it finished the autotune and just sat there, then after a few seconds said 'no signal'. After three tries we found by trial and error that you have about 5 secs to press some button or other or it doesn't memorise the channels. We then had to do a factory reset because it had (for instance) put BBC1 on number 338. The we discovered that the view DTT you have to select as if it's AV input 3, which is barmy. After that it was OK. One hour forty minutes battling with the damned thing! Bah! Bill |

Easily the best solution, Bill is your man :-) I bought one of the TDA4510 chips from CPC. The chip supplied was marked with a date code that showed it was 10 years old. It did not fix the fault. Apparently the "fix" was to use a special revision available only from Sony at the time. The revised part is no longer available. Go the RGB route, it lasted over a year until the ex and TV left at the same time. One went into a skip, I'll let you guess which one! Dave |

Can anyone recall a TV advert for the stuff where the brand name is definitively pronounced? I will amuse myself in the local supermarket by asking the checkout supervisor (who will be an expert on English Language) 'whats this brand of powder called?' Roger |

At the mo I think the digi box out is to the (RGB) tv, the digibox out to VCR, VCR out to DVD? and DVD direct in to scart 2 of TV and PS2 in the front normal audi/video and s-video connection. so some colour some B/W - carnt have it all i suppose? best SHook |
