Default Lip Sync Issues With Modern DVD Players

hi,

just bought a cheap DVD player (a Sony NS30) to replace an ageing Wharfedale
750S player. The picture quality is fine but I was suprised to notice a lip
sync issue with the few DVDs that I have tried it with so far. The video is
most definitely delayed by a noticable amount relative to the sound. I
thought that lip sync issues would have been solved by now (the Wharfedale
has its fair share of issues in this respect) but this doesn't seem to be
the case. The TV I use is a Philips 100Hz set. I have heard of this type of
issue relative to some flat panel displays (delaying the video) but I cannot
believe that the Philips causes any problems in this respect. In any case,
would it not introduce an audio delay (via the scarts) to compensate if it
delayed the video due to the processing?

Anyway, assuming it isn't my TV, what do you have to pay for a CD player to
not suffer from this problem? Do any players have audio delay adjustment
built in (and adjustable?)

Regards
Tony

Lip-sync issues do seem to be more common with plasma and LCD TVs. Good
quality DVD players have lip-sync adjustments (mine has) and now so do
many A/V amplifiers.

'You pays yer money and takes yer chance' perhaps, or something like
that? I suppose that some samples of kit might be worse than others, but
this isn't something new.

What discs have you seen this on? I don't ever remember seeing a lip sync
issue on my Pioneer 444. I'm guessing that your TV is processing the picture
signal and introducing the delay - if it has the option, try disabling all
image processing and see if it helps. If so then you know it is your TV
causing the delay.

The problem may be somewhat in a DVD player but DLP, LCD, and Plasma
displays add most of the delay. There is a LOT of info on this at
www.LipFix.com - a site specializing in lip-sync correction. The
problem with most DVD players that have an adjustment is that its in 10
or 20 ms steps which is not fine enough. It needs to be in one ms
steps.
