I'd consider $ky HD if there was a single tuner box up for grabs rather
than the $ky+ HD offering. I'm not really interested in re-subscribing
to $ky, but assuming that the BBC also does it's HD thing during 2006 it
might be an easy and cheaper way to get into it. No chance though.

I'm sure the BBC will be a FTA service, you could buy a proper HD satellite
box and not a crippled Sky one.

There is no doubt at all that once the BBC (et al) start HD sat
transmissions there will be many non-Sky STBs available to receive
them. The BBC and other FTA/FTV broadcasters will not make the same
mistake with HD that they did with digital.

I suspect that they all bitterly regret ever having become involved
with Sky, as indeed apparently do all companies that ever become
involved with Sky.

Yes, it does seem that way. Aren't monopolies marvellous? Going for a
non-$ky HD STB sounds like a good idea providing that it can handle SD
stuff too. Of course the downside is that without $ky kit, the likes of
C4, C5 etc. won't be up for grabs on SD. Still, I'm in a strong Freeview
area, so not a big prob., but perhaps one for those not so fortunate who
want to avoid $ky.

Whereas I strongly suspect that you are engaging in wishful thinking!

All of C4/C5 (and others) seem to find Sky very professional and will quite
likely go with them for HD as well!

I will wager a small sum that both of these will stop encrypting just
as soon as their contracts with Sky allow.

Ask Sony, Panasonic, Tivo, ITV, the BBC etc. what they think about
Sky. But ask them in private.

Many broadcasters using Sky encryption do so because they were
railroaded into it. Sky are masters of the "offer you can't refuse".
