Default LyngSat Web site wrong??

Adrian A kindly pointed me to http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html in reply to
my query titled "Help for satellite (NOT Sky) newbie".

I've done a comprehensive comparison between what my box receives on a
per-channel basis, and what it says on the Web site.

Either my box is lying, or the Web site is seriously wrong (or out of date,
more likely).

Take a look for yourself. For example, the web site lists

12110 H, TP21, 27500

....as a Sky Digital with Videoguard channel. My box does not list anything
on that frequency, but it DOES list:

12109 H, with a TP number of 28, and it carries:

Turn on TV
Look4Love
TWC
Star Bazaar
Quiz TV
GDTV
Open Access
Audi Channel

This is just one example of numerous anomalies. Sometimes the frequencies
are off by 1MHz, and quite frequently the channels are completely wrong.

Is this something I'm misunderstanding, or is the LyngSat Web site a load of
crap? If so, is there a more reliable source of this data?

Thanks!

Steve

Probably becuase the frequency could be 12,109.5 the website has rounded it
up, your box rounded it down.

Probably because the frequency could be 12,109.5 the website has rounded it
up, your box rounded it down.

My STB assigns TP numbers, and determines FEC automatically. The key parameters
are polarity, symbol rate and the frequency which may have a small discrepancy.

Satellite TV channels are also listed on http://www.satcodx.com/uke/

Individual channels do come and go, or change parameters, or have strange
names/numbers which conceal their true nature.

As a newbie you appear to have little respect for a website that has been
around 8 years of more bringing everyone satellite channel information from
many satellites. For many years I have use the website in question and it
has had very acurate information, although I have not recently checked it
out, I will be very surprised to find its as bad as you are suggesting. Are
you sure you have your own system configured correctly to display the
correct frequencies for the LNB in use?

Agreed in general, but I never assume a historically good website is still
up to date.

Two examples (non-tv) but I'm sure a lot of people rely on:
www.adslguide.org.uk - no ISP comparisons since October, a lot of the
pricing information is dated early 2005, and there are big gaps with some
ISP information where I know packages have changed in the last few months.
www.samknows.com - another ADSL information site, very few updates since
mid-2005 so I can no longer rely on the information.

My major gripe is that I go onto newsgroups/forums asking for infomation as
a "newbie" in some areas, and then get the usual Google pointer (not always
appropriate), or directed to "gospel" sites such as the above and Lyngsat,
regardless of whether they are actually up-to-date and useful!

The moral of the story? Don't believe the hype...

Surprised me with that info. that the site is wrong in many places.

Are these wrong as well?
http://www.kingofsat.net/en/
http://www.satcodx.com/eng/
http://www.transponder-news.de/

If your you find these same as Lyngsat I wonder if the box is OK.

I don't see any disrespect, it seem like a perfectly good question to
me!.

So is it wrong or not?...

I agree, its fine to ask the question, but its not a good idea to say you
are a newbie and then go on to suggest a longstanding satellite related
website is 'crap' in the same post. I've been using http://www.lyngsat.com/
for many years, and it gets updated regularly.

He said "is it crap" not "it is crap". Big difference.
