Default Sky+ to PC/laptop

Hi,

I'm sure this has been asked before but cant find anything. Can anyone point
me to a FAQ? I dont have a DVD writer, but I do have a PC and a laptop. I'd
like to stream some of my recordings from my sky+ box to my pc or laptop,
but I do not know what I need or how to do it. Any FAQ or web site would be
great. Cheers,

Steve

I use the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2 TV Card - works a treat using the S-Video
output

I found PC world to be the cheapest palce for one - log on to their web site
and add to your basket then arrange to collect in store for the on-line
price of £80.96

You can't extract directly. You will need some sort of video capture,
either USB or PCI/AGP. Your existing video card may already have the
function.

There is no real difference between capturing from the Sky+ or
capturing from any other video source, with all the loss of quality
that implies.

For real digital extraction you would need to use a non-Sky receiver.

I use a dreambox 7000s with third party software (SDT Image). It works
fine with a Sky card (In fact it will take two at a time - which is
quite useful if using two different satellites - ie, sky italia and sky
uk.) From this you can stream using a web interface and a program
called vlc to any pc on a local area network.

You can also record to a harddrive installed within the box, with the
decoding being done before the recording. However, there is only one
tuner unlike the sky + box, so you can only record and watch something
on the same transponder.

I use this mainly as I am in a marginal signal area, and the horrid
Amstrad thing we have has a very pool tuner.

You will lose the red button function, but most of the streams are still
available.

Don't buy a dreambox just for Sky uk though as when Sky change the cards
it'll stop working until the new card/cam encryption is worked out.
Dreambox software was a very long way behind other solutions.
You could also use a sat card for a pc with sky card in phoenix interface
or workout the sky+ hd format, it isn't that hard.

I only have "FreeSat", so the card only gives me Ch 4, 5 and Sky 3. Of
those we watch 4 occasionally. So if it all stops working I don't think
we'll be that upset.

The original Amstrad box has a rubbish tuner, so the Dreambox is
preferable. (We're way out on the fringe, using a 2m dish to pick up
Astra 2d in Venice, Italy.)

I am waiting for the Sat guy to come back with a twin lnb and a DiscEq
switch to the Hotbird dish, also on the roof, then I can watch local tv
on the laptop in the kitchen too.
