Default Has ITV News been scrapped?

Just noticed a message on the ITV news channel slot (freeview) saying:

The ITV News Channel Is No Longer Broadcasting....

Its not on Sky either!

That was a snap descision wasn't it?

It was originally going to close Jan/Feb 06, but they took a decision
last Monday to close on 23rd Dec to save the staff having to work over
Christmas knowing that their jobs were going.

WTF is wrong with ITV?

They dump a news channel, in favour of **** like ITV4? What a load of
bollox that is!

I think they've lost their way. And if Alan Sugar is right, they should be
quaking in their boots, as advertising on TV is on the way out too.

Well Joe Public didn't want to watch ITV News in enough numbers, so it
wasn't that ridiculous a move to dump it particularly as ITV wants space for
a childrens channel.

Hey presto ITV News dumped and now there is space for the ITV kids channel.

One of the reasons that Joe Public did not watch it was down to the way
ITV made it part-time during the re-engineering work this year, and when
Setanta wanted to show footie in Scotland. And do you remember only a
few years ago when you couldn't watch it when GMTV was on air on ITV1?

Another reason may have been the apparent lack of commitment to the
channel - dreary sets, godawful "news theatre" approach, those annoying
"moving graphics" behind them (made me feel as if I was on the open
sea), and a lack of widescreen output.

You only need to take a look at Sky News to see what I think is a
refreshing makeover.

It would be nice if they gave some of the space to their other channel,
so we get better quality, but that will never happen, because it seems
quantity is better than quality these days and people just seems to agree.

No, I don't think so. News is expensive to provide. The ITV news
gathering service has been paired to the bone, so that they can't keep
up with $ky and the Beeb. Commercially, it makes sense to me. Besides,
on Freeview at least, we didn't need three news channels IMO, so I'm
glad it's gone. ITV4 is a good substitute in my book, although the
presentation leaves a bit to be desired - squishing-up programmes before
they've finished playing to announce what's next, inserting ad. breaks
half-way through scenes, etc., but still better by far than yet another
news channel.

I feel sorry for the people getting the chop though, especially just
before Christmas - a great way to giving Christmas cheer - not.

Clem
