Default AArgh! Why does this happen?!

Set my video to record "Return of the Saint" at 6:01PM on ITV4 tonight, came
back to watch it and all I got on tape was one hour of the banner saying
"ITV4 Programs Start at 6:00 PM", with the soundtrack playing in the
background.

The VCR is a Toshiba with an infra red emitter on top which selects the
channel on my Grundig Freeview box. I have noticed that if you have the
digibox on before the programs start, you have to change channel and change
back again once the programs start or the banner stays on screen, hence I
set the VCR to start at 6:01. However there was no sound until about 5 mins
into recording so I guess ITV4 was late starting. (The clock sets
automatically on the VCR, referenced from teletext perhaps? so it must be
accurate).

Any road up, can anyone please tell me is this persistance of banners a
quirk with my digibox, or is it to do with the broadcaster, and if it is,
can/why don't they do something about it. I know that the same thing happens
on a Thomson DTI2300.

Thanks in advance.

Ralph.

My Tivo has done the same thing on ITV4. I've tried to record The
Water Margin for the past two Sundays and had exactly the same results
as you describe. Only seems to happen on ITV4 and if memory serves,
with two different boxes, as I switched them around middle of last
week. Odd.

The BBC bless 'em seem to have solved this one. Their part time
services now start with a short "Welcome to..." programme for a couple
of minutes so the programme shown as starting at 19.00 actually starts
at 19.02.

Of course you have to know this so you can set your timer to start
late, I notice Digiguide shows the programmes as starting at 19.00
wheras the EPG shows them at 19.07.

I don't think that this is a new problem. I used to get exactly the same
problems when E4 was on ITVDigital. In that case I'd end-up with a
recording that was a solid black picture and no sound for about the
first 10 minutes or so of the first programme of the day if I tried to
record it. ITVDigital blamed E4/C4, C4 ITVDigital. It would seem that
there's something in the datastream that's causing the problem, but I've
no idea what. I saw my E4 problem on two ITVD boxes and never did get an
answer.

I think that you'll have to talk to ITV and/or your box maker about this
issue. If I get a mo., I'll try my Sony box and see what happens on ITV4.
