Freesatfromsky see sig

Next year there will be a real freesat from the BBC and ITV

Not sure when/if Ch4 and Ch5 will join. You will need a $ky STB, and a
dish.

This already works with generic STBs for BBC channels, but no ITV, Ch4 or
Ch5 yet. http://www.wickonline.com/fta.htm

Dave Fawthrop dave hyphenologist co uk Sat ITV, Ch4, Ch5, only GBP20
http://www.freesatfromsky.com - "what is freesat?" - "view T&C" -
What will I receive "£20 ... one Viewing Card". You will also need
$ky box and dish. List of Channels at http://www.wickonline.com/fta.htm

That depends, somewhat, on what channel / programme content you
want...

I've wondering exactly what the BBC Freesat service will be other than
a branding exercise or alterative sky card provision. I was at the
least hoping for some kind of open standard alternative EPG data
compatible with a standard satellite receiver. Possibly even the
option of simulcrypitng channels such as 4/5 or an alternative default
transponder for Sky boxes. Even some kind of open HD system.

From what you say it sounds just like branding with no technical
difference?

My views entirely!

Also remember that the BBC disliked being in the situation with ITV Digital
and Sky Digital as the only two non-cable suppliers in that *EVERYONE*
had a STB with a decoder in it. Many people in the BBC are scared stiff of
some review doing the sensible thing and causing the loss of the licence fee
and them being told to go subscription!
I think that the BBC have even admitted that part of the reasoning behind
Freeview was to get lots of FTA only STBs out to the public!

Another reason for Freesat?

You will not need a card, and will be able to receive it on Generic STBs.
Such as the Lidl One covered here, there are many other suppliers. The
BBC channels are already receivable on generic boxes.

The main difference to the present situation will be that ITV will go Free
To Air. Hopefully Ch4 and Ch5 will follow.

But how does this differ in any way from the current technical
situation? If they're going to promote generic receivers they should
at least do the decent thing and provide a standard EPG.
