Excuse me being a bit off topic but...........
My elderly Sony Trinitron (1988 vintage) has started to switch itself on from standby all on its own. At first I thought it might be my Philips Pronto playing tricks so I took it to bed with me and the tele was back on in the morning so not that. I think there was a recall on my model to replace a dodgey power switch so I tend to just put it in standby with the remote to save wear on the switch. Anybody know why this is and if it is a sign of anything more serious about to happen? (Like flames)! Regards, Nige |

Regards, Nige You could get somebody around to attempt a repair, but given its age it is probably not worth it. I suggest unplugging it when you go to bed, which will allay your fears of flames when asleep and will prevent it from switching on. -- MESSAGE ENDS. John Porcella |

My elderly Sony Trinitron (1988 vintage) has started to switch itself on
from standby all on its own. Does it have a standby timer? IF so, perhaps that got turned on accidentally. John |

It will be the same as an old car - repair it and another fault will appear. Throw it away and buy a new one. Regards |

Has it got anything like a touch sensitive switch? There used to be
switches on older TVs that looked like two metal strips and when you "pressed" them, your finger made the contact and thus activated the switch. These can get to be dirty and the dirt and grime conducts sufficiently to make a contact. Also, many of the switches on TVs work in a similar manner but with a button that has a small rubber pad with some conductor on the back. The inside of your TV is probably very dirty and this dirt may be making the contact. Unfortunately in this case you would have to strip the case down to clean the contacts which is possible but not a job for the feint hearted. And don't forget to unplug the set and leave it alone for a couple of hours before even starting as there are some nasty voltages in the back of these and you want them to go before you brush up against something! Seems a pity to discard an otherwise perfect set but be prepared to pay something like £50.00 to get someone else to sort it out, if you can find anyone that it. Welcome to the throwaway society - sigh. Paul DS. |

Feint - A deceptive action calculated to divert attention from one's real purpose. You *could* try tricking the TV ;o) Honestly IMO the 'switch off at the wall' approach sounds like the best. For this small inconvenience you'll probably get a couple of years more service out of it, and save power, reduce fire risk etc. The cost/danger of fixing it doesn't add up. ALex |

Slightly off topic, but maybe helpful: The ancient TV in our bedroom
has no remote control (it's a cheap model from about 20 years ago), but we have it plugged into an OnDigital freeview box. To turn it off at night, we've got a remote power socket from Maplin. iirc we paid around £15 for four (during a promotion). It works off 2.4Ghz radio waves or whatever it is, instead of infrared, so doesn't need line of sight. Just another way to keep an old television in surface once you're too old/fat/lazy to do without a remote ![]() |

The switch seems to be a mechanical thing and I assume, seperate from the 'infra red coming out of standby' side of things. I'll probably keep it going a while longer using the switch on the wall socket while I keep my eye out for something really sexy to replace it. The radio sockets from Maplin sound interesting cos the Pronto can do radio as well but I'll have to look into that. Regards, Nige |
