I have a Mits 65613 RPTV and can record OTA HDTV broadcasts
via Firewire in HD to the Mits HS-HD2000U HD VCR. The D-VHS recordings look (as they should) as good as the original HD broadcast. I also have a Samsung satellite receiver which is connected to the Mits RPTV via the DVI input. The Mits RPTV manual has the following info about making VCR recordings: Source Destination ------ ----------- digital digital vcr Allowed digital analog vcr Allowed analog analog vcr Allowed analog digital vcr Not allowed Here is my problem: I can record digital OTA to the D-VCR and I can record analog to the VCR (in S-VHS analog mode), but I cannot record the DVI source to the D-VCR. Does anyone have an idea how I can record HDTV from the DVI input via Firewire to the D-VCR? Any info appreciated. Nemo |

This is because the D-VCR is recording the transport stream in its encoded form; the tuner in the TV does the decoding. DVI does not transmit information in that form, thus it is not possible to record from the DVI input to a device expecting an MPEG transport stream like the D-VCR. -- There are no monkeys in my email. |

It looks like I have just spent $4,600 to do something that cannot be done. Is there a DirecTV satellite receiver that has a DTV output that could be sent via Firewire to the Mits D-VCR? I would spend more to get the combination that would allow HDTV recording. Thanks for any info. Nemo |

Thanks for any info. Not that I know of. Dish is releasing their PVR HD receiver with FireWire jacks, but I've heard they are going to ship disabled. It's just as easy to capture the sattelite stream to disk, but everyone is paranoid about recording. Supposedly TiVo will have a HD PVR sometime the end of this year or next quarter. There will probably be a DirecTV version. -- There are no monkeys in my email. |
