Default Channel numbers

Why don't channels have the same channel number on Freeview, Sky, NTL and
Telewest?

I'm particularly surprised that a new channel like More4 will have four
different numbers (165, 166, 142 and 13). Could they not find a three-digit
number that was unused on all four networks, and maybe had some fours in it?

A man's vehicle is a symbol of his manhood.
That's why my vehicle's the Piccadilly Line -
It's the size of a county and it comes every two and a half minutes

Just think how lovely it would be to live in a communist state where
everything could be organised.
Not!
Anyway, what difference does it make?

Channel numbers are assigned as channels join each platform. They all join
at different times. 165 and 166 on sky for more4 and +1 makes perfect sense
as it puts them directly after E4 and E4+1. I assume 13 on freeview puts it
after E4 too.

Why wouldn't they?

They know "Freesat" is coming.

They know the BBC is FTA.

They know ITV3 is FTA.

They're not stupid.

INDUSTRIAL.

Well they managed to foul up the cricket on Film 4 this year, that should have
been FTV but was 'subs only' most days.

it will be on 35 from 10 - 17 October,
then EPG position 13 from 18 October)."

LOL. What a cock up. It seems like channel 35 is vacant on Freeview - I
wonder why they didn't just put it on 35 nationally and leave it there?

No, E4's channel 14 on Freeview. (and E4+1 is channel 39!)

Both your message and your sig suggest that you yearn for a perfect
world. Alas, there isn't one. The chances of the broadcasters making an
agreement like that are about the same as the chances of my cats
sharing their food in an amicable and socialistic manner. And yes, my
vehicle is a symbol of my manhood. It is very old, nowhere near big
enough, and won't start when I need it urgently. Ohh, and there's a
water leak . . .

Ahh, but when it was newer it used to get me into some scrapes I can
tell you! I used to boast I could get it anywhere.

Bill
