Default Sky plus and instant rewind

Just got a Sky+ 160 and was wondering whether having instant rewind
enabled impacted hard drive life to any great extent?

Two schools of thought:

1) If the drive is used constantly it reduces drive life.
2) When the drive stops and starts it suffers more wear than when it
is left running.

Subscribe to which you will. The two drives in my Tivo have been
running 24/7 for 3 years.

It's a pretty good feature.

And unless you really are averse to doing any tinkering, if it does go - you
can either place an engineer call, if in warranty - or easily replace it
yourself.

Sure, you may stand to lose some recordings, if it does fail - but I've no
reason to think that using such functionality (and let's face it, it is
standard, built-in functionality) should have a profound affect on MTBF.

Ok, thanks. The drives they use in these boxes are noisy (compared to
the Seagates in my PC), which made me notice the drive activity more
