Default Alternatives to Sky+?

Dear all

I absolutely love Sky+. But when you actually look at what I watch, it is
actually 95% of channels that are on freeview. If I weaned myself off
watching football and my 3-year old son from Dora the Explorer, it seems
crazy to be paying £33 a month for the privilege.

What is the best solution for a PVR that has a twin tuner that can do what
Sky+ can do? I was looking at one at www.unbeatable.co.uk but there are
rumours that it has gone bust. Other sites have the Thomson DHD400 but it is
unclear whether you can watch one recorded programme whilst recording two
others.

Please, can anyone free me from the shackles of Rupert Murdoch? I've been
funding his empire since 1993!

Why not pop over to uk.tech.tv.video.pvr

Argos do a twin tuner Freeview PVR for well under £200. My brother has
one. There are several others and you don't have to buy from
Unbeatable if you don't fancy them (though I don't see why you should
worry as long as you use a UK credit card).

Unfortunately Unbeatable are no more. They've gone into administration.
Their shop in Crawley is all shuttered up and I couldn't see much sign of
life round at their warehouse either.

That would indeed be a good reason not to order from them, even with a
credit card. Shame though: they were one of the better online
retailers.

Phil, I saw a fusion PVR that does what you want it to do in Dixons on
Saturday for 125 pounds. Dixons in Maidstone for what it's worth. I've been
thinking about it ever since.

On the website they are going for £179.99. I'll definitely try to have a
look at one working. Thanks for the heads up!

That's exactly what I've gone for. I'm lying in wait until either i) a
better twin tuner PVR is released or ii) SKy drop the charge on Sky+ as
discussed in this newsgroup.
