Default Irish Channels

So, another year goes by since I last wrote to sky regarding RTE and such
like, and their lack of availability to the UK. Of course, NI customers can
see it, but the rest of us Licence Fee / Sky Subscribing customers cannot,
YET Eire customers get to see many of our channels FREE (BBC etc). Sky last
responded with 'we are trying to negotiate... blah blah blah', yet still
nothing. I'm tired of getting screwed over as a British citizen - we seem
to pay the most for everything yet get sod all in return from other EU
countries.

Is there a petition to sign to try and help push the introduction of Eire's
channels? Fairs fair, they get ours, why can't we have theirs?

You pay a licence fee to the BBC for the BBC channels, not for RTE.
It's RTE's decision whether they make their channels available outside
Ireland, and the general opinion seems to be that they are highly
unlikely ever to be able to do so, especially as they are reliant on a
large number bought-in programmes for which UK-wide rights are already
held by other UK channels.

As a relatively small national broadcaster with a fairly modest
income, you could take the view that RTE would be better off spending
that money on serving their own viewers rather than expanding into
foreign markets.

YET Eire customers get to see many of our channels FREE (BBC etc).

That's because we pay the BBC so much that they have trouble spending
all the money. It is, in any case, no reason why RTE should do the
same, even if they could, which they can't.

The BBC still maintains the fiction that they do not broadcast to
Ireland, since with the exception of BBC1/2, the other TV channels and
radio services are not listed in the Irish EPG. (But of course you can
easily tune the channels in on your Other Channels menu.)

My Licence Fee point is that we (UK citizens) pay the BBC a shed-load of
cash to even own a TV, let alone watch any BBC channels - Eire citizens do
not pay the BBC a penny, but get the channels we pay for.
You're point (correct I'm sure you are) regarding "UK-wide rights held by
other UK channels" - how come Ulster (still part of the UK last time I
counted) can legally get Eire channels with no restrictions - how does that
get past the 'UK rights' issue?????????

I have to disagree with you. If you are/feel Irish, there are lots of
documentaries, films, entertainment and news which is relevant to the
Irish diaspora. If you are having trouble with your identity and are not
sure whether you're Irish or not, these 3 stations should sort you out.
If you are not pro-Irish, then its not for you unless you are open
minded but there are still many movies to satisfy any body's diaspora.

I wouldn't get too worried - I live in NI and RTE's crap. The only good
thing on it is live saturday premiership football matches

If you really want to test your identity, try watching the old LateLate Show
with that sickarse Gay Byrne and that will certainly sort out your identity.

What used to tick me off about the GB show was that any competition shown
always requested that you send you licence number along with the entry.
This of course stopped us from the North taking part!

I know things have changed lately.
