im thinking of switching to freeview for a while, can you get the non
subsciption channels without paying, or do you need a valid card of the
minimum package to watch the non subs?

Firstly it is not freeview. Freeview is the terrestrial service (aerial).
You will be needing "freesat".

You sound like you currently have a sub with Sky, and so will have a
satelitte (Sky) card already, so, do the followin now;

Pull the card out now. goto through channels 101 - 999 and make a note of
what you can see without the card. Then, add ITV1*, ITV2*, Ch 4* & Ch5* and
that is what you will get.

*these channels will need your current card inserted. They are free, but
need the card.

When you cancel your subs, your card will revert to Freesat status, depsite
what some Customer service people at Sky may try to convince you.

You do not need to buy a new freesat card from them. (Remember this if they
tell you otherwise).

http://www.freesatfromsky.co.uk/?pID=3 to see what you will get.
