I'd niminate the box in the corner Picture in Picture as
one of the most useless features ever. I don't know anyone that ever uses it, including me who foolishly bought a TV with that feature. I do however, think I would use a full screen side by side PIP. Do any of these new big screen HD TV's offer that feature? Thanks |

I'd niminate the box in the corner Picture in Picture as one of the most useless features ever. I don't know anyone that ever uses it, including me who foolishly bought a TV with that feature. I use PIP a lot for when I'm copying or backing up large files on the computer. I can watch TV or a DVD or something while easily seeing how far my computer job is progressing and noticing if an error occurs. Also, if I'm copying something to videotape I can see how it's going while watching something else. Of course, this is still just a minor convenience. It's not a deal maker or deal breaker. Any existence or lack of PIP features didn't enter into my purchasing decision one iota. I do however, think I would use a full screen side by side PIP. The only time I've uses side-by-side POP so far is when a friend of mine was entering videogame cheat codes into a "Gameshark". One side was the videogame console, and the other side was the computer displaying the appropriate web page with the cheat codes. It was convenient to be able to enter the codes without first writing them down or printing them out. I suppose I might also use side-by-side POP to watch something while having the "Prevue Guide" channel scrolling cable TV listings on the other side. Other than that, PIP is generally more satisfactory. Do any of these new big screen HD TV's offer that feature? I think practically all of them do, although it's called "POP" (Picture Outside Picture). My Mistubishi has various PIP and POP modes, including that side-by-side POP. Interestingly, the alternate picture is obviously converted to composite and passed through a cheapo notch filter for display. This doesn't matter for most PIP/POP modes, but in the side-by-side mode dot-crawl artifacts are quite visible. In the above example of a videogame/computer combination, we had to set the computer to the primary picture in order to read the web page comfortably. The Playstation2 had much larger text so was less adversely affected by the ugly notch filter artifacts. Isaac Kuo |
