"aa" wrote in message ... In , DAB sounds worse than FM wrote: People are buying cheap Freeview boxes because it's a cheap way to get a few extra channels. There's no promise about being delivered HDTV, so they won't get a shock. They may if they've shelled out for a new aerial and now discover that HDTV is the new way forward. -- But compared to forking out for the cost of a HDTV satellite system and a 'HD Ready' display device, still a miles cheaper way of gaining a host of extra SD widescreen digital TV, plus radio channels. aa |

I think ITV probably would, because it's beneficial for them in the long-term. Not sure about five. None of ITV/C4/C5 are currently FTA on satellite!!! Yeah, my mistake. But I still think ITV and C4 are more likely to go on Freesat than not, because it's in their interests to be a big fish in a small pond rather than being a big fish in an ocean. -- Steve - www.digitalradiotech.co.uk - Digital Radio News & Info Find the cheapest Freeview, DAB & MP3 Player Prices: http://www.digitalradiotech.co.uk/fr..._receivers.htm http://www.digitalradiotech.co.uk/da...tal_radios.htm http://www.digitalradiotech.co.uk/mp...rs_1GB-5GB.htm http://www.digitalradiotech.co.uk/mp...e_capacity.htm |

Personally haveing gone digital now I will not be rushing into anything more/different untill well after analogue switch off, if/when that happens. I don't know whether HD is eventually planned for Freeview but yes, I think a lot of people who bought into Freeview could be in for a shock when the emphasis switches to the superior HD technology. Why would they be shocked? Freeview has never been touted as HD-ready , and for the cost of the box it's not going to have been a major outlay. -- Alex Hermes: "We can't afford that! I do not see how this is possible. The DTT system is close to capacity as it is. Until switch-off of analogue, there is no real chance of it happening. Or are all these people who are currently buying Freeview going to get a shock? Shock? Only if they stick their fingers in the electrical supply! -- MESSAGE ENDS. John Porcella |

"John Porcella" wrote in message ... Or are all these people who are currently buying Freeview going to get a shock? Shock? Only if they stick their fingers in the electrical supply! Many of those buying set top boxes or IDTV's for Freeview do so in the belief they are moving to the latest technology. They won't be best pleased to find out, just after they have splashed out on new gear, that the next generation of High Definition technology is about to be launched and they won't be able to get it without buying yet another bit of kit. So I agree with David (the OP) they probably will be shocked, shocked the salesman never mentioned it. FWIW, yesterday a salesman in a national chain of retailers (no not Comet) advised me that unless I was with Sky, I need no bother to get an 'HD Ready' TV (for future proofing) because the BBC HD service is at least 9 (nine) years away. I believe he told me the truth as he knew it. Shocked. Roger |

Only if they stick their fingers in the electrical supply! Many of those buying set top boxes or IDTV's Why the apostrophe for a plural? for Freeview do so in the belief they are moving to the latest technology. They are! However, surely if they want to be at the cutting edge, then they would take Sky D? They won't be best pleased to find out, just after they have splashed out on new gear, that the next generation of High Definition technology is about to be launched and they won't be able to get it without buying yet another bit of kit. Highly dubious. A Freeview buyer is trying to get digital TV on the cheap and so I doubt would typically be the sort of person who would get a HD capable TV instantly...an early adopter? I doubt it. So I agree with David (the OP) they probably will be shocked, shocked the salesman never mentioned it. I cannot agree. Many of those buying set top boxes or IDTV's Why the apostrophe for a plural? Because apostrophes are for more than possessives and letter omissions; they indicate plurals in some circumstances. "How many f's are there in Fulham?" "Are there too many but's and and's at the beginnings of sentences now?" The use of apostrophes for the plurals of dates and abbreviations is not well defined. In America, it is standard practice. In Britain, it was common in the past, but not so much now. It might be more common, over here, to use "1980s" instead of "1980's" and "MPs" instead of "MP's" lately, but you can't say that it's "wrong". -- Dave Farrance |

Not to mention the fact that their warehouses and shop's are all overflowing with expensive 'none' HD Ready displays, which will all have to be offloaded onto an unsuspecting public. Shocked. Roger |
