Comcast (Motorola DCT6412) Ethernet Port

I called Comcast here in North Arlington NJ and asked and they
had no clue what I was talking about. I wanted to know that ethernet
port on the back of the box was enabled. I assumed it was since I
hooked up a laptop to it and I was getting an ip address and a default
gateway. When I tried to do anything like surf or email retrieval, it
did not work. I was wondering if anyone else had this issue??

It's for the box's built-in cable modem, which your operator has apparently
disabled or not provisioned. I suspect the latter, especially if the
IP/Gateway addresses are valid (i.e. in the same subnet you'd get with a
provisioned cable modem).

If you have cable modem service through Comcast, you could try calling them
up & telling them you have a new cable modem you want to provision, giving
them the MAC address of the DCT6200 (it's probably on a label on the
back/bottom of the box, or is accessible through the service menu).
