Yes, but I suspect that I would do it also.

I will tomorrow. The new card arrived today and its no different.
Rang them
up and they offered me a technicians visit for £65 etc. I told them
I'd try
swapping the card first with a neighbours'.
I tried forcing a software update as well but no joy. Could it be a
software
error do you think?

If the new card doesn't show a number in the system details then it
is the box which is faulty.

It may be the card reader or it may be the software. Either way you
can find a used box for much less than the £65 call-out charge and
can buy a brand new one for only a little more than that charge.

Actually I've been to the Sky website, and if I was a new user, I
could have sky+ with the package I've got now for just £89 for the
box and not have to pay the extra £10 a month!
Sounds better than the option of just replacing the current box. If I
cancel my subscription now, and take out a new one in my wife's name,
that's not cheating, is it?!?!?

If you call Sky to cancel, and when they ask why, you tell them it's because
the box is bust, then they are likely to offer to replace it at no charge, if
they don't then you could always try signing up as a new customer, though is a
little tricky when the surname and bank details are the same. Though if you
do sign up again for a free box it's back to 12 month contract. If you
cancel, and then a few weeks later obtain another box yourself, you can then
subscribe again with just a 1 month contract.

I checked the website again and the new user offer is strictly only for
those households (ie you or anyone you live with) who have _never_
subscribed to Sky.

So I took your advice and rang up to cancel. They offered me a half price
deal on the £65, so I accepted. Digiboxes on eBay are going for about 30-40
quid so I'm getting a good deal if someone comes to my house and fits it and
gives me a 3 month guarantee for £32.50.

Its just a pity you have to threaten them with cancellation to get some
sense out of them isn't it!

Thanks and Regards
SW

Only trouble is you can guarantee someone in the company will figure out
where everyone is getting their advice from and stop offering the "half
price if you try to cancel" option as soon as I try it!!!!!!! LOL

PS My Sky+ Box is OK at the moment however if it went wrong, my other half
is so addicted I suspect he would willingly pay the £65.

Getting sense out of them? You're given free equipment at the outset and a
guarantee for a year and if something goes wrong after that you expect to
get it fixed for nothing or next to nothing !! Try getting a washing
machine fixed - callout charge plus parts and labour. Sky are mugs

You are'nt charged 30 quid a month to *use* a waching machine!

The prices they charge for viewing, The equipment should actually be like
Cable and paid for by the company to maintain for the whole time the
subscription continues.
After all, A digibox without a card is pretty useless and purposely made
difficult to use on other satellites.
Sure there's a minority who can use the box for FTV channels because there's
no Freeview in their area or cable but it's not that many.

Sky+ without a sub is the perfect example...Without a sub it's a normal box!
