Default Astra signals

I understand that there are 3 (?) different Astras at 28.2E and the hardest
to receive is the 2D signal.

So I'm not surprised that I'm able to get E4 (North) and not E4+1 (2D) but
I'm completely stumped as to why I can get BBC1 Wales and not BBC1 South
East. I'm actually in Wales, but they can't boost the "local" signal can
they?

Also, am I right in saying that each Astra just broadcasts some of the
channels? So if I can get nothing but the 2D signal I can only get some of
the stations (like BBC)?

This would be better addressed to, say: alt.satellite.tv.europe.

I don't happen to know, and you don't make explicit, whether E4 is FreeSat,
FreeToView (ITV1, C4, C5 viewing card), or a Sky sub, but anyway I would
say that it sounds as though your dish is slightly out of alignment. I can
pick up all the Astra 2 stations on my steerable dish, but obviously I can't
decrypt most of them.

All the BBC channels, including regional transmissions, some of the ITV
channels, and a handful of others are broadcast in clear. Hopefully the
FreeToView channels will follow sooner or later.

Thanks for that. I'll have a wonder over there.

I didn't realise there was any way to get E4 on satellite except by Sky sub.
Anyway that's what I was talking about.

There are also at least one Eurobird satellite there too, almost same
possition, being used to broadcast to the UK.

2A, 2B and 2D. There's also a Eutelsat Eurobird at 28.5E, which is near
enough as makes no odds for most UK sets. See who is on what at
http://www.lyngsat.com/ or http://www.kingofsat.net/en/ and read news
at http://www.digitalsat.co.uk/

If you only have 2D, you only get some stations and your dish needs
adjustment IMO. Not too difficult if you have a good receiver.

(2C is currently at 19.2E, covering for the dead 1K, but will
reach its intended location one day http://www.analoguesat.co.uk/ )

Four satellites! I expect it's my 40cm dish that's the problem.

In addition, as I have found out just recently, some of the Sky Digital
channels come from the nearby Eurobird, which is at about 28.4 degrees.

I thought that the minimum needed was about 60cm!

It's got something called a "casegrain" LNB which is supposed to make all
the difference. (it doesn't!)
